Considering there are so many people who connected to them just fine, you probably just didn't want to like them because you grew attached to L.

That's exactly what I'm saying though.Β I grew attached to L, as the mangaka no doubt intended.Β Then L died and those two were presented as his replacement.Β I'm not saying that you or anyone else aren't allowed to like Mello and Near, but I call that poor writing when you try to quickly shove a replacement into place with no or very little build up.

Build up? For a character? That makes no sense. They were never intended to "replace" L, they continued his work. Why would you foreshadow these characters when theres no reason to? If anything it might just spoil L dying by showing his successors.

They are his successors and as such inherit his position in the story.Β There are ways to introduce the fact that L does have a system of successors without being too obvious.Β It could have been done much better, but it wasn't.Β Forgive me for over-analyzing it.

Considering the original plan was to NOT have a second season and to just have Light win, why would they foreshadow something they weren't sure was going to happen? Revealing Wammy's House would've spoiled it, and it is mentioned in passing during the 1st season anyways.Β
Honestly, if they had introduced Near and Mello so early on (especially since they would've been only 12-13 anyways) would've completely spoiled L's death and it wasn't necessary. Build up is used for plot, not characters.

I remember I stopped reading it for a while to accept his death/work out possible loopholes (mostly the latter), but I came back to it and I mat say I'm quite glad I did!

I must admit that the rest of the series sucked after L died even though I was on lights side cause he was awesome in my opinion and I only watched the rest of the series for him only for me to cry at the end mainly cause the ending sucks but ahhwell.... It's ok. And don't worry, when I read Death Note (a few years ago) I also knew L would die because I had read a spoiler somewhere... but I still finished the manga and the anime and death note became my absolute favourite of all time, although I've read tons of mangas after that. So I think the spoiler doesn't really matter^^ (though of course I was a bit angry/shocked when I read the spoiler)
