Description As I said, no Photoshop artistry has been applied. I know it's just a flower, but what I see still disturbs me somehow.

Thank you. You know, I don't feel safe anymore in my very own garden now! Oh, what has this world come to ... I can manage wolves, I know how to step around bears, know how to avoid snake bite, lice, nits, mites, ticks, dog turds etc. - but this?! I feel small and lost suddenly.

Come the Day of the Triffids

Ah, so you know John Wyndham's "The Day of the Triffids"? My deepest respect then, Sir! It's decades since I read this book, but it made a lasting impression on me. And who knows, maybe it even sharpened eye and senses for the existence of this particular flower I portrayed?

And it is my duty, of course, to mention another Triffids-existence, namely that of the Australian band who used John Wyndham's book to find a name to go by, "The Triffids". Should it happen that you've never heard of them before, then go for "Born Sandy Devotional", an album that defines them excellently. Stark songs straight out of the stark Western Australian landscape.

My very best to you, Sir.

I read it at school, in the early '60s

In the early sixties? You've been a few weeks ahead of me, then. I think I came across it in the very early seventies, if I'm not completely mistaken. But see, I have been such a compulsive reader (still am), that I can't say for sure. From newspapers to comics to graphic novels to literature to  philosophical stuff to whatever, I would have read anything. If there were letters, it was good enough for me. I'm a bit more particular by now, since I cannot read for many hours on end anymore. Still, walking into a bookshop gives me the fits, because I feel I must buy most any of the books offered in such demonic places.

Right now it's "The Orphan Master's Son" by Adam Johnson that I'm reading, but this in between of any a work by Henry Rider Haggard. For me, it was very fortunate that Leonaur Publishing House has re-released Haggards works in full. I used to read  them (long ago) as versions which were truly cheaply translated into German. What a pleasure now to be able to read these works as they were published a hundred and more years ago.

You may have a point here; the evil life-eater and the eternal kitsch-pony who mated in a moonless night courtesy of their hormonal needs, only to spawn a flower that tells of their mismatched get-together, frowned upon by the Gods and laughed at by an unsuspecting mankind. Oh, we can live with all that, but it's their revenge I fear ...

Say, did Gandhiji really say “I believe in equality for everyone, except reporters and photographers.” ? If so, he was even wiser than I originally thought ...

That's the spirit, my friend, that's the spirit! Leave them botanical oddities aside and go straight for the shanks or some spare ribs.

I was actually hoping for some flak from the vegetarian/vegan league, but so far I've not been successful.
