It is either a source of partsor will be re-built for Iowa Pacific which runs a passengertrain to Indiana. I hope they re-build her!Β

It looks almost camera-shy, probably because of the state its in.

I think there's another stray E-unit and a bunch of MARC equipment at the Midwest Railway Preservation Society in Cleveland, I should have taken pictures of their assorted stock when I went to the ISG/Arcelor/LTV plant to check on events at their substation.Β (They had horrifyingly crusty potheads (insulated terminal between open wires and a cable) for their feeder cables, there was black goo everywhere...)

This is my favourite shot of this batch. It sits there like some sort of dead beast.
Are there really plans for restoring it? AFAIK there are very few E8/E9 still running.

Got it.
In Italy preservation ofΒ historical valuable rolling stock started some years ago with some difficulties, entirely based on a few initiatives by small groups of railway workers; so entire fleets of locos or passenger cars β even "flagship" ones β were just scrapped, or heavily reconditioned thus losing much of their historical value. But now a true preservation movement is finally on the move, to the point that the railway company itself (Trenitalia) established an heritage bureau.
How would you judge the situation in the US?

Okay, so I have a ton of questions now:
1) Where at in Elk Grove?
2) How can I get there?
3) Are we allowed to be on the property?
4) Is she still there?
5) How have I not known she has been there?
(Last one is metaphorical)

1.) South of Foster. I took this shot at Foster down the spur. I went south on Β Thomas (which is just east of the spur)Β to a factory parking lot and through the weeds to the E-Unit. This link shows my Flickr of the site and a mapΒ
www.flickr.com/map/?fLat=41.96β¦
2.) York to Foster then west to Thomas and then south down Thomas. You should see the locomotive if it is still there.
3.) Probably not but no-one was around or hassled me
4.) IDK... If I feel up to it I'd go back... there might be other stuff there too now
5.) I only know because saw a post of Iowa Pacific E-units on Flickr and looked at the map. The pic I saw included the ex-IC CN unit in silver and black as well...Β
Good luck!

Thank you so much for the directions. My father and I found it today. She is still there! I snapped a few quick shots of her with my phone before I "stole" a kickplate from underneath the engine compartment door and a two foot green 9 off the back panel, lol. She looks abandoned, and I wanted a piece to remember her by should she be scrapped. Next time I see you, I'll bring them along if you want to see. My dad and I found two other E Units (one IC and one WSOR) along with three silver and red Bi Level cars.

I'm glad you caught it, I knew about the other E units even though I didn't catch them. Lucky getting the "9"!!!

For a little while there was a B E Unit with the others, but that is gone now. That poor BN E unit is a parts donar now, her taction motors are gone.
It took a little work but I got it off, lol. It is safe in my house ready for framing, lol.
