This to me is what I love to see! A Southern Pacific unit leading the way

I think this is one of my fav shots of all time! And the SP still has the full light package...Headlight, Pyle oscillating light and Mars light!

It was really cool to see these at night! Once on the BN (before it was BNSF) an SP run-through came at night and I couldn't figure out why one headlight was blinking above the other! Then I saw the Gyro-light and it was so cool...better than boring ditch-lights!

I wish I could have seen an SP unit like that at night. I have seen some units at night that have the Gyro lights, and those look a lot cooler than bland ditch lights! The first time I saw an unit with a gyro light, I thought I was seeing things until the unit got close to me.

It's hard to believe all the railroads who had them, I know offhand CB&Q and IC did...SP was the last to give up that package. So much cooler than ditch lights that's for sure!

Yup. I am glad SP was the last railroad to hold on to that cool light package. I wish I could see those lights again instead of seeing ditch lights all the time...

I wish I could have been around when SP ran around where I live.

I occasionally see a patched AC4400W, but its nothing to the real thing. One of my favorite toys in MSTS is my set of SP SD40-2Ts I found on trainsim.com

The red Gyralite/Mars light I understand. But the second pair of headlights that the SP insisted were needed remains a mystery to me.

They sure looked cool, especially at night... A lot of RRs seemed to have something similar back in the day...CB&Q and IC in particular. SP kept there's much longer and I was sad to see them go!

how can you tell a tunnel loco from one that isn't? any good pics to do a side by side comparison?

They have a big open screen on the sides in the rear close to the deck.

I'm sending you a link to Wikipedia that shows Tunnel Motors, click on the picture and you can see the profile and how the radiator intakes at the rear are different from a regular SD40/45 [link] This article I think explains it really well.

Yes, to suck in the fresher/cooler air near the bottom of the tunnel.

haHA! (that expression doesn't write out half as good as it sounded in my head/out loud) how long are the panels out of curiosity?

LOL!I'd say between 5-10 feet. Next time I see some I'll get a shot, or I might have some in the archives to scan in.
