Description
F-102A 56-1114 carrying spurious, but incredibly beautiful markings of the 84 FIS on display in front of the old 26th Air Division SAGE building at Luke AFB.The CONUS Air Defense was broken up into air defense "Sectors". The system was controlled by the SAGE system, "Semi-Active Ground Environment". At the zenith of this system, the ground controllers in this building could scramble Air defense Command fighters and then vector the fighters toward the enemy targets by sending up steering and altitude cues that showed up on a large moving map display in the cockpit. In the extreme, the SAGE controller could actually fire the weapons without pilot input. It was a pretty sophisticated system!
The 26th Air division used to control the 84 FIS F-106 fighters stationed at Castle AFB, CA. The 84th jets carried these lovely markings. Unfortunantly, the 84 FIS never operated the F-102!
This particular jet used to be based with the 194 FIS, California ANG at Fresno.
The 26 AD inactivated in 1983 when the SAGE system was deactivated. This building was gutted and remodeled into the base personnel building at Luke.

Fascinating background info! Very pretty plane, too. Not one of the better-known ones, I think! Great!
