Description GE C44-9W 4839, EMD SD70MAC 8816 and GE ES44C4 7021 locomotives parked next to the turntable at the Grand Forks BNSF yard in April 2013.

All three locomotive were sitting quietly idling. I love the sound of the locomotive's diesel purring, the air compressor's kicking on and off and the relief valves bleeding excess air pressure...

It was pretty neat. The roundhouse has been demolished, but the tracks remain. It was a fun day of shooting!

It was. You can see the outlines my the discoloration of the pavement. It does not show up well in the photo though.

You can still see signs of the old 360* roundhouse we had at proviso, when the gravel in the parking lot gets craped around during winter plowing you can see many of the tracks that used to support the old C&NW steam engines. It feels odd parking atop those old rails...

Almost as good as the noise of the cylinder drain cocks on a steam engine being opened and the hiss of steam blowing through... or "Big end knock" on a mallet or similar?

Yeah One of my favorite sounds was the AMAD (Airframe Mounted Accessory Drive) of the F-15s as they taxied by me at Luke. I would have ear plugs on, to block out the high freq jet noise, and you could hear this mechanical hum of the AMAD gears turning from the engine PTO shafts. The AMAD in turn would drive the CSDs and hydraulic pumps.
