Description
TA-4J-DE, 153495 assigned to VC-12, based at NAS Oceana and seen transient at Luke AFB in October 1982.Other than the "01" painted on the nose, this acft is devoid of ant disctintive unit marks.

That is an engine gearbox vent. It is not 'smoke' on the side of the fuselage but staining of the flat paint from oil vapor. If you look at other A-4 pics you will see it on the right side ofthe fuselage [link] , [link] and [link] .

all jet engines have a gear driven system to drive the fuel pump, fuel pumps and engine mounted accessories. On centrifugal flow engines they are mounted on the front of the engines and on axial flow engines they are driven from a tower shaft down to a gearbox bewow the engine.

How much have they evolved since the first jet engines? Are they just better at everything or it don't compare?

The metallurgy and digital fuel controlling really makes the new engines much better than the early jet engines in the 1940s through the 1980s. The new blades are 'grown' from a single crystal of metal and are much superior than the older casting of blades.

Yeah, I saw a documentary were a engineer talked about the process of making a blade for the Trent(?) engines, but they didn't say much, it was all very hush hush...
