Description 005/006

I never post any of my traditional works online...but right now I am. These really aren't finished works though, they're just compositional sketches, so that's why I'm being lenient.

As for the process surrounding these works....I started them off by just trying to get something random down on the page. I borrowed the dadaistic utilization of chance by sitting by the fire and trying to reproduce the shapes of the flames. Obviously we just can't interpret the motion of the flames fast enough, so I ended up recording the shapes about a second or two after they occured. I did that in graphite in order to get something down on the page. Sticking with the dadistic element of chance, I then went into soem old national geographic magazines and cut out a small composition from a page taht I liked and then flipped it over and forced myself to use whatever was on the back of the cutout. Sometimes it was a really good composition, sometimes it was just text.

I themed every page with one line from the picabia dada manifesto: Dadaism is nothing like your hopes, paradise, idols, polititions, heroes, artists, religions. Then, i picked up whatever reversed cutout reminded me of the theme for the page and pasted it down somewhere on the page.

I simply then used various media to finish the composition. At this point the point was to loose myself from my own concept by working quickly and randomly. And ultimately it worked very well seeing how as I was trying to explain them to ken the next day, i couldn't remember much of my concept. All in all i ended up with some really good compositional sketches that I normally wouldn't have achieved.

For all of the random access of Dada, artists using strictly structured processes to modify the entropy seems to destroy some of the purity of the result. Not that purity itself is the final desired outcome of cours,e but it's like the quantum theory (and I am by no means an expert) that when you measure you change the outcome.

To capture the "Dada" experience requires a degree of randomness but this process of recording is then encapsulated into regimented stages. Somewhere along there the intent, the idea is compromised by the process of making a physical record of the idea I think.

yeah, this is definitly twisted from dadaistic philosophy/theory, but some of it's basis is definitly dadaistic in nature.
