Description "The Mahopons. An élite among the warriors of Fabierex's army, these Patapons are chosen for their affinity to magic... only a few of them have the huge honor to learn the secrets of the universe, and the responsibility to wield the forces of nature in battle. Magic is a much more mysterious fighting style than using a sword and a shield, so it requires a specific training to be properly learned.

This is why the Almighty Fabierex, helped by Yan the Late Mahopon, Priestess Meden and other magical beings, decided to create a Sanctuary for the Mahopons in a place where nature and magic coexist: the Nyokiri Swamp, a land so big that it wasn't even explored in its entirety by the Patapons. It is also said that it's home to mythical beasts, way more dangerous than a herd of Gancheeks and even more fascinating than a Golden Motsitsi. Although it's full of perils, it's the perfect place for the young Mahopons to learn the secrets of magic.

The Sanctuary is normally hidden from the prying eyes of enemies and from the curiosity of the rest of the Patapon tribe, but it's not just a matter of privacy. Inexperienced wizards can harm others and themselves, so they need a safe environment to practice with certain spells and develop their skills. However, if someone is in need of help or is in search for tranquility, they are welcome here!"

The Nyokiri Sanctuary is a school and a monastery at the same time. Its occupants usually live here all the time, but they can choose to return to Patapolis for a small break if they desire so. Also, once in a week, the Patapon tribe is allowed  to visit the Sanctuary and to celebrate with a great buffet. The entire compound is protected by a magical barrier that makes it undetectable and nearly unvulnerable from most of attacks, magical and not; the perimeter is set by few guardhouses that hosts a small troop of soldiers, in case of invasion. - You can never be too careful! - says Geito grumbling, who designed these defensive measures.

From left to right, we have:

- The Nyokiri Temple: a magical building where Priestess Pali can communicate with Patapolis and, if she desires, with her sister Meden and the Almighty Patapon himself. It's also a place of meditation for all the Mahopons; whenever they feel so, they can take care of the magic plants that grow in the temple. A relaxing hobby, useful to achieve peace of mind and body.

- The Dojo of Mysteries: the place where the magic happens... or, at least, where it's taught to the young students. Here, the nature's secrets are revealed to the future Mahopons. During the lessons, the students are encouraged to cultivate the weird-looking plants growing in the swamp, in order to enhance their contact with the earth. According to Priestess Pali, the magic here is stronger due to the wooden structure of the buildings, created by the magical trees that grows in this land. A faint glow seems to emanate from the wood, surrounding the place in a mystic atmosphere.

- The Bonfire of Spirits: after a day of lessons and practice, all the Mahopons (students and teachers) sit around this big bonfire to eat and talk with each other, like a family. No more studying ancient spells, time to sing and fill your stomach with delicious food! It's a common tradition for the old Mahopons to narrate ancient tales while casting multicolor spells to entertain the young students. Even during dinner there's a chance to learn something new.

- The Waterfalll of Visions: the magical source of power of the Nyokiri Swamp, it represents the center around which the Sanctuary was built. The effects of these waters are even more powerful than the ones used in the Thermal Relax Centre, and can be potentially dangerous. Their healing properties are incredible, but their most unusual quality is to induce visions in those who drink at their source: only an experienced Mahopons can use them without losing control of his mind, but their effects can be useful if he's in search of a solution for a problem or wants to see certain future or past events. The waters can be exceptionally given to Patapons who are particularly ill or have been severely wounded, and although the recovery is certain, there's a chance they can cause unpleasant hallucinations or nightmares. Still, Patapons are eager to take the risk, believing that these mysterious waters come from Earthend itself.

- The Mushroom Garden: a field where are cultivated two special variety of mushrooms, particularly strong and originally germinated in the Barabaran Crater after the destruction of the World Egg. Due to their angelic-demonic nature, they provide the basis for most of the food and the magic potions produced here. These unique properties captured the interest of Rah Gashapon, one of the very few Patapons who are allowed to come in and out the Sanctuary whenever they want. That's why his Stews are so rinomated: their flavor are not of this world, and their empowering effects are sufficient proof to believe so! Patapons also like to relax on these giant mushrooms, voluptuously inhaling their fumes to the point they faint. This unusual sleep often induces beautiful dreams; who knows what the fumes are showing them...Earthend? IT? Or maybe a succulent Motiti leg?

To make this, I was particularly inspired by another PSP game called "Ape Escape: On The Loose", a remake of the original game for PS1. One of the levels, set in the Mysterious Age, is called "Cryptic Relics" and takes place in a strange complex of ruins, dug into a mountain! A beautiful night sky shows the moon and the stars, while being continuously crossed by comets. I fell in love with the place and I promised myself to portray it somehow in one of my works.

If you want to see for yourself, check this video at the minute 2.29: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzwDmQ… ;

I created this picture while listening to the soundtrack of the level itself: www.youtube.com/watch?v=KupwKJ… ;
This song was composed by the great Soichi Terada, who created all the soundtracks of the game. My personal advice? Try looking at my work while listening to this song, it might help you appreciate it more. Or, listen to a song of your choice that makes you feel like you're in the picture! I often do it while creating my works or when I admire other artists pieces. It really works!
