Description
Somehow Lisica had found a moment to slip away from the herd. She’d felt this growing sense of need that had turned into that of urgency. A trace of something familiar had hung on the wind, and it had been driving her crazy. She knew that scent, it had been one she’d grown close to in the vast, and seemingly endless time she’d been in the Dark Forest. Though his scent wasn’t there, not even faint, her scent was simply hers. She’d gotten free of his grasp as well, and Lisica… needed to see her for herself.
She moved quickly, hoping to be back before anyone was the wiser. But even though she mentally tried to prepare herself, she was still shocked when she saw the figure atop the hill. Her features were unlike that of any other, no one could have known her and forget her. Lisica felt a surge of guilt, bubbling up from her core and nearly overwhelming her. I can’t do this… she began to panic, her limbs growing shaky and a lump formed in her throat. You must do this… Another voice seemed to speak to her, though it was probably just her conscience.
After she’d left with Torage and Ignacia, she’d gradually begun to regain her memories. Her real memories. The ones that were tainted with fog and poison by the Bloody Bachelor, remained, but they didn’t control her anymore. With the newfound clarity to her mind, she also gained the sense of responsibility for the fates that many of her fellows had befallen. For she had been the lure. The voice of the demon, the sing-song melody that drew victims to his clutches. Perhaps that was why none of them truly liked Siren.
She grimaced as she thought of her dead name. Siren. The tool… That’s all she ever was to the demon, a means to gain. He’d used her, forced her to sing and attract more to his harem, to feed his desire. Each new member gained their own gifts. Perhaps they didn’t remember the sickeningly sweet vocals that had dripped over them, ensnaring them, and dragged them to their doom. The worst part… she had enjoyed it.
She squeezed her eyes shut as she remembered these dark, terrible thoughts. She didn’t want anyone to know, no one could know how she had felt in that time when she was with the Bloody Bachelor. She wouldn’t speak of it… All she could do now was the next right thing. She swallowed past the lump in her throat, and furrowed her brow. She could do this.
She began to approach the mare, and timidly called out, “Mummy?”
The smaller mare lifted her head, alarmed by the sudden voice, and perhaps the name spoken. She jumped, and started to run away when Liscia quickly tried to ease her panic, “No no! Please, let me explain. I-um…” she sighed, “I’m sorry, I don’t know your name…” She lowered her head.
The mare stopped, looking back at her, her eyes still wide with fright. She looked around wildly, “I’m not going back. You can’t make me.” She said, firmly but softly.
Lisica’s eyes lifted, encouraged by the fact she stopped and spoke back to her. “I’m not here to take you back. I’m not going back either. We both got out mu-” she cut off just in time to avoid saying her old name again. “W-what is your name now?”
The little striped mare frowned, seeming uncertain, but after a few moments of thought she turned and began to slowly approach Lisica, slowly coming down the hill some before she stopped at a comfortable distance. “I’m Nefertiti now.” She paused, her expression looking sad, “You… you made me go in there…”
Lisica didn’t realize she was crying until her voice broke when she spoke, “I’m s-so sorry…” Hot tears spilled down the side of her face, “I never would have done it if I’d had the choice…”
Nefertiti lifted her gaze, “I know.” She watched as Lisica approached, “Could you ever forgive me? For everything? The things I said…and did… and for ruining your life…”
Lisica didn’t expect forgiveness. She expected hate and retaliation, she expected to be screamed at, chased off, attacked on sight even. But she was surprised when Nefertiti did none of those things, but simply spoke in a soft, tender voice. “I could.”
Liscia was so overwhelmed with relief, that she sobbed, and reached out to touch Nefertiti’s face, tenderly, “Thank you. I don’t deserve it…so thank you.”
