Description
Started as a practice page since I was having some trouble getting the angle of nose to eyes right on the 3/4 view, but then turned into this silly whatever featuring Swifty and other still in development BBA characters. The hyper-detailed and realistic sketches are mostly drawn from photos (since this was for practice). The rest are not.Sometimes I wish all the wolf photos uploaded to various photo sites weren't of these picture perfect captive bred wolves in winter coats. Yeah that's gorgeous, but that's not how they look all year round NOR is it exactly how they look in the wild. And there's rarely any way of determining whether the photo is of a wild wolf or just another fat zoo wolf you see on every wolf calendar in existence >
Also breaking in my new brown sketchbook, white pen, and pentel stylo pen. Mark McDonnell tipped me off about pentel stylo pens. They're so much fun, like the best combination of a calligraphy felt-tip pen and a ballpoint. Wonderful line quality!

I agree, REAL wolves wouldn't look like they just had their fur groomed or something, and their actually more skinny then fat

I love the effect of the brown paper. These all have great substance and credibility even though you anthropormorphized them (visible scleras).

Well for the photo referenced ones, it's just to make the eyes stand out for the drawing's sake. I don't consider a touch of white anthropomorphizing them.

It's just practice really. Look up photos of dog skeletons and muscular anatomy and start from there. Practice practice.

Man, this reminds me of my own studies. I devolve into my characters. The guy outlined in red looks like he's from the wild, and in summer coat.

has pretty good luck finding wolves in their summer coats and thin ones to boot. You could ask her where she's finding her references? Though she might be drawing without them, I dunno.
I like the one outlined in red; he's cute.

Hey these are very nice.
What I wanted to know was, where exactly do you find one of those white pens? that would come in handy for my silhouette practices right now.

Such charming sketches, and yes I feel your pain. It's difficult to find photos of real wild gray wolves, when all you see are a bunch of fluffy, pampered zoo wolves, the kinds that you see on t-shirts and posters.
Maybe you could look up photos of wolves chasing elk or wolves just after a kill. They may not be pretty or airbrushed, and there may be pictures of dead wolves, but they're pretty raw and good for reference.

Wow! Your wolves are vastly improving. Love the 'rawr' one especially! I totally understand about the captive photos too :/ Most big cats like Amur Leopards or Snowies are nearly impossible to get wild photos of.

I tried choosing photos from wolves that didn't all look the same. Not so much markings but just a wide variety of face shapes. Some of the difference was because of species, others age, but it at least helps you get a handle on variation.
