Throughout Spring and Summer you will find these all over the place. Whenever I can I try and stop for them to remove them from the roadways, including the individual in the photograph. Box Turtles are awesome creatures and can live up to 80 years. They get their name "box turtle" from the "hinged" parts of their shell that close when they withdraw into it.
