Atavism is a tendency to revert to ancestral forms/behaviours. In Mai Hime, Shizuru spends a lot of time fiddling with Natsuki's hair, which I likened to monkeys combing fur of other monkeys in search of fleas to eat. And I think Natsuki playing with a banana as if it was a gun is self-explanatory ^_^
