They WERE going to be Matt's shirt color, but it wasn't awesome enough.
The Middle one is modern. Mattie's wearing a hoodie, and those didn't become popular until, like, the eighties. It IS plausible he was exercising in, like, the nineteen thirties or forties but the way Jake wears his jeans (His boxers hanging out) hints at more modern time, eh?
And he's supposed to be wearing a vest in the first panel too? D8

no, no vest in the tea party. vest in the jake/mat one. usually when my sketches aren't all that clear, i can see them the way you see them, but this one... i really have NO idea how you're seeing a hoodie on mat in that one
