“I don’t believe in resurrection. And yet I have already lived a thousand lives.”

I close my eyes and when I open then again, a moment later, I find myself standing at the railing of a sailing ship, surrounded by the vastness of the open sea. Waves crash against wood and rocks, drops of saltwater get caught in my feathers. I shiver as I watch dark storm clouds drawing closer. The crew calls out for each other to take shelter, the captain of the ship prepares himself to fight against the rain. There is fear in the air and suddenly the smell of salt and fish makes me sick. Will we survive the encounter, or will we go down? I take a deep breath, gripping for halt when the first gust of strong wind hits me and closing my eyes to protect them from the water splashing into my face.

“I am neither ageless nor immortal. And yet I was there, fighting all the wars.”

Within the blink of an eye, the ocean and the storm are gone. It is not sea water hitting my face anymore, but branches of a tree. It is a pitch-black night, if there is a moon in the sky, it is blocked the foliage of the forest. I can barely see a thing, but I am running anyway. Running and panting heavily. I am short of breath and there is a heavy pain in my chest, but I don’t dare to stop. I must escape before he gets me, but he is getting closer. I can hear his joyful laughter, which gives me goose bumps and makes my heart race faster. I can hear his footsteps right behind me, his presence haunts me like a shadow. Every movement I see in the corner of my eye makes me wince and every tree seems to be on his side – reaching out for me, grabbing me. I am afraid, terribly afraid. If I had any breath left in my lungs, I would scream for help. I keep running.

“I am not skilled enough to build a time machine. And yet I have experienced both past and future.”

Suddenly, I find myself within a clearing and come to a halt. The night has passed for a beautiful day; the sun is warming my face and I am not followed anymore. I feel calm and delighted by the beauty of nature that surrounds me. I hear a rustling sound to my left and when I turn my head, I can hardly believe my eyes: A unicorn comes trotting in my direction, its horn sparkling in the sunlight. It neighs, lowers its head and appears to greet something or someone on the ground, hidden by a blueberry bush. When I make my way around the bush, I spot a group of fairies hiding in the grass, their wings flapping excitedly at the sight of the unicorn. I hear their giggles and laughs and decide to keep on walking, as not to disturb their peace.

“I have never before left the place I am from. And yet I have travelled the world.”

Stepping out of the clearing, I leave the forest altogether and fiend myself surrounded by strange looking machinery. The floor I am walking on rumbles slightly, it seems to be moving. I take a glance around and realize that I seem to find myself in the control centre of a spaceship. Taking a look out of one of the windows confirms my suspicion: Not far away I spot an asteroid approaching a planet and there are stars as far as the eye can see. My admiration for open space gets cut short when I hear the noise of an alarm sounding, followed by a voice that echoes through the room: “Attention! Enemy vehicle detected. Defensive mode has been activated. Please retreat to the safety zone and prepare for impact.” Hurriedly, I follow the rest of the crew.

“I cannot soar nor fly. And yet I have touched stars and viewed the earth from above.”

And I find myself standing on a balcony made of finest marble. I have a perfect view of a beautiful city spreading out in front of me and yet within some distance. In between lies an orchard of orange trees. I take a deep breath, inhaling the smells of early summer, sweet fruit and a garden filled to the brim with flowers. I look down and spot a handsome Viscet of royal lineage walking through the garden, approaching the villa. They are dressed in fine silk, which rustles slightly in the summer breeze, and carry with them the most beautiful bouquet of roses I have ever seen. Just below the balcony they come to a halt and look up to me; wearing a smile as bright as the sun on the sky. My heart flutters just as much as the butterflies in my stomach and a laugh escapes my lips as they blow a kiss towards me. As fast as I can I make my way inside and run down the stairs to greet them.

“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.”  (Jorge Luis Borges)

But when I blink the orchard and the garden cease and I find myself in a library, surrounded by thousands of lives I have yet to live. I put down my book and smile at my visitor, who simply smiles in return.

“Can I help you find something?” I ask and they shake their head. “I’ll let you know.” They glance at my book. “On another adventure yet again? Where are you heading this time?”

“Ancient Rome.” I smile. “Maybe I’ll tell you about it when I return.”

"Those who read are the most adventurous of all."
