No dear, using the same stock picture is not copying. But if the end product consists of only one image anyway, it is quite close to a copy.

Using the same concept, which has been done before, like, the waiting girl on a cliff with a ship in the background, is not copying in my opinion. Because concepts are done over and over again. In art, music, television, advertisement and so on. It is considered a greyzone.
Copying something 1:1 on the other hand side, should not be tolerated. But that is not what she is doing.
I think there is a lot of envy going on because she's popular. I mean look at this:

All of them use the same stock girl. Are they copying each other? No. They're reinterpreting a theme the style of the stock picture reflects.

Is anyone picking on them? No. Because they don't get more than 500 favs for almost every picture.

Well, I wasn't exactly trying to "stand up against" anything. If I had been, I would have said something in my artist's comments about it. I wanted to see how easy it was to manipulate a picture like that. Turns out, it's pretty easy.

I still disagree with you that the people who are complaining about her are envious of her. I'll admit that I'm envious of lots of people on this site - but not because of how many favorites they have, but because of the talent they have. I have come to learn that on deviantArt, hundreds or thousands of s does not mean an artist is talented, or produces high quality work. I learn that every day I search by top favorites.

Well, I know how deviantART works. It's all one big popularity contest. I see proof of it every day when I look at some popular anime artists' gallery. If you have "made it here", when you've reached a certain status, then it's not important if your works have quality. There are enough people who admire you so much they'll fav everything you submit.
Popular people always have it easier, both in the internet and the real life.
As wrong as it sounds, you can have the most talent for something in this world, if only a few people recognize you, it means nothing. If no one knows you, how shall your talent be appreciated? Of course, in the end it means something for you, and you're happy with it. But when it comes to publishing your works or comparing them to other artists, you can only shake your head, which makes you bitter.
Of course it's unfair. But it's how things work, unfortunately.
If people can't accept that, they should either work on their popularity, or if they despise being popular, they should stop complaining.

Well, I guess I got a little off the subject.

Anyways, as long as she does not violate dA rules, there's nothing going to happen. Even in a greyzone, when the artist is a paying member, a subscriber, they're more likely to tolerate it than ban someone who helps keeping the site working.
