Luna is the actual name for our planet Terra. Earth is another word for ground and since the only earth we know of is below our feet we just commonly call our planet "The Earth" and since our moon Luna is our only moon we find it more simple to just call it "The Moon".

I knew Earth's actual name was "Terra", just like I knew The Sun's name was actually "Sol". The moon, though, I wasn't sure. If our astronomers actually call it "Luna", than that's outstanding.

Whats even more cool is that the dark spots on the moon? Those are called "mares" (Pronounced "Mah-Rays"). So even here in our world we have mares in the moon.
