Once she was bound into his service, Callista's skilled assistance more than doubled Jervil's ability to acquire captives, and this accelerated both his efforts to provide Maladyne's devoted converts and his personal research. He began to investigate the enchantment of various materials to use in his work, sharing the fruits of his learning by fashioning a new suit of armor for the young blond thief. The fabric was woven with runes to collect and hold shadows, its pieces blending together more by act of will than the act of getting dressed. Donning it, Callista became little more than a shadow in Dernhem's alleys and corners until she climbed, crawled, or pounced to the attack. The only drawback to the protective outfit was the black hood, which she despised wearing save for in the most risky of ventures, as it seemed she could hear the rat-man's whispering voice in her ears when she had it closed tightly about her head. Albert Fiskerne's less-grudging assistance made up the difference, and a steady stream of acquisitions began pouring into the chambers beneath the Fair Harvest Inn.
