Description
Traditional line drawing (9" x 12") colored in PS CS2. Total work time: 12 hours. No references. This represents the epitome of my digital skills at the moment, even though I can see where and even how I might take this one further than it is. Only a bit further, however. Technically, as several good viewers have pointed out, this is just a glorified "coloring book" image. My answer to such a comment is: "At least I'm comfortable doing that much, which is a start."
Edit (June 11, 2007): I've done this using channels, not layers. It keeps the file size small, which keeps my computer from crashing so often. I haven't figured out a way to use lots of layers without the process becoming very bulky. I'd certainly welcome tutorials on such a thing at this point.
On the other "Amazon Slaves" themed pieces I've put up, viewers have commented on "three things" that I have tried to address with this one. "A," the title. Julie and Tana here are not Amazons (warrior maidens), but are, in fact, university undergrad students involved in a field-trip catastrophe in the upper Amazon Basin, Brazil. To reflect this, I have changed the title from "Amazon Slaves" to "Slaves on the Amazon," but to be honest, neither title sounds really good. So, I'm open to suggestions for a series title, if you viewers have any. "2," There is no shading. I've toyed with two ways of dealing with that issue, but haven't found my own niche as of yet, so I'll keep messing around with it until I do. Any suggestions you have will be appreciated, but it will pay to be fairly technically thorough in describing steps, as I still feel like Photoshop is such a foreign country to me that it might as well be the surface of Mars... "And 'D,'" There is no real texture. I am struggling with the idea of keeping it a digital drawing, rather than diving into a painting, which is what my natural inclination says to do. I'm trying to avoid going with my "tried and true" methods and forging out into new territory, so whenever I start some technique for texture that feels like what I've already done in oil painting, I stop short and back off. Again, any suggestions and tutorials you can link me to at this point will be helpful.
Finally, this is to be my real entry into the monstersandmaidens club's May-June contest: "Jungle Jeopardy," in which case "Annie the Anaconda" will fulfill the role of "monster." Hopefully I'll have this polished up, shaded, and texturized better than it is right now by the time the voting starts...
And, while I was numbering my points two paragraphs ago, I couldn't help but slip into a rather humorous movie quote--an "A+" grade goes to whomever can guess the title of the movie I was quoting with the bold stuff.
Enjoy!

You encountered the Yanomamo? I hope it was under safer circumstances than those pictured here!
Thanks!

I like this a great deal.
Their university training didn't do these girls much good.
I don't know which is worse--being eaten by the snake, or having the natives taking a captive.

Oh, I don't mind coloring books so much, but I find that when my art looks that way, it's not personally fulfilling enough for me--the idea doesn't leave my mind and instead continues to haunt me until I do more to it.
"Field-Trip Catastrophes, Near and Far" is a perfect title for this...
Thanks!

I really like how simple yet detailed this piece is. The line work has really great lines, and the simple colors give it a nice flat look. Looks like a comic book cover. The snake and the plants are my favorite parts, followed by the women and the natives. Great work Jeff.

Thank you! I hope to do more with it, but I'm pressed for time right now and trying to get ahead on "Vision Impaired" before I return to the digital realm. Still, I have some good motivation to continue on with it and try some new things, and your work is partly responsible for that, of course. Thanks!

Home Alone, dude!
And ten to one somebody beat me to it. XD
Anyway, how did you manage this with channels? Now I'm curious ^_^
I think it looks great! The "middle" flat-tone colors are the hard part, anyway.

I love your style, this one in particular who cares if some think it may look a bit on the coloring book side! Any good pieces involving beautiful women in the coils of a giant snake are always the subject of my praise!

Awwwww, Annie just wants a hug! How rude of those girls to be screaming in her poor sensitive ears! There, there, Annie. *Consoles her*
I actually really like the flat looks that these pieces have, but if you really want to take the coloring a step further, I shall suggest a few things:
1. Shade the picture using darker shades than what you already have.
2. Highlight the picture using lighter shades than what you already have.
3. Use the Burn tool (it should look like a grabby-hand... at least it does in my version) and make darker, deeper shading to your liking.
4. Use the Dodge tool (should be selectable if your right-click the Burn button or vice versa) and add in more dynamic highlighting.
This style of shading and highlighting is exactly what I used in this picture, [link] , and is very useful if you think your picture is lacking a certain "Oomph!" quality to it.
Hope this helps!

Nice one over all, I kinda like the whole flat colour thing, but if you want to add depth without adding too much to file size just use the darken tool with a low opacity on certain areas, play around with the brush shapes till you find one you are happy with.

I know f*** all about art, or photoshop, but I do know what I like.
It's interesting to see the difference between your black-and-white, highly-detailed drawings, and this simpler, but perhaps more living miniseries. Both are recognisably your style, but each with a different appeal.
I like the coloring job, despite (or maybe even because) the lack of shading. It's vibrant and simple.
The anatomy, as always, is excellent, and I really don't envy you for having to draw all those leaves on the ground. That's why I'll never be an artist: No patience.
Really nice, complex tangle of snake and woman there. I guess getting kidnapped and tied up isn't so bad in comparison.

Thanks for the compliments here. Interestingly enough, I only get complimented on my patience when people are talking about art of this kind. I am going to work with the shadows a bit, and I have some good suggestions on where to start. So, we'll see how things turn out. Glad you like it!

...not complaining but what are the chances of two females of amazon woman looks (Ya can't deny that bit!) being dressed in bra's and panties being captured in the jungle?
...Considering who drew it, I'd say I'd be worried if it didn't.

Well, a friend and I are working on explaining the "underwear-in-the-jungle" bit. For now, however, we'll just go with your conviction that in this artist's world, it makes total sense. What else would they be wearing in one of my pictures?!

I think that the redhead gets snaked, and when the blonde is trying to help her, the natives pounce on them both, kill the snake, and then bind up the women for their journey into the jungle (pictured on images 01 - 03). However, there is no specific order here at this point. I have had a few images pop into my head regarding an Amazon Jungle expedition gone awry, so I'm drawing and posting them all. I actually hope someone else can put them together with a story.
Thanks for the compliment!
