Description
Traditional line drawing (9" x 12") colored in PS CS2. Total work time: 12 hours. No references. This represents the epitome of my digital skills at the moment, even though I can see where and even how I might take this one further than it is. Only a bit further, however. Technically, as several good viewers have pointed out, this is just a glorified "coloring book" image. My answer to such a comment is: "At least I'm comfortable doing that much, which is a start."
Edit (June 11, 2007): I've done this using channels, not layers. It keeps the file size small, which keeps my computer from crashing so often. I haven't figured out a way to use lots of layers without the process becoming very bulky. I'd certainly welcome tutorials on such a thing at this point.
On the other "Amazon Slaves" themed pieces I've put up, viewers have commented on "three things" that I have tried to address with this one. "A," the title. Julie and Tana here are not Amazons (warrior maidens), but are, in fact, university undergrad students involved in a field-trip catastrophe in the upper Amazon Basin, Brazil. To reflect this, I have changed the title from "Amazon Slaves" to "Slaves on the Amazon," but to be honest, neither title sounds really good. So, I'm open to suggestions for a series title, if you viewers have any. "2," There is no shading. I've toyed with two ways of dealing with that issue, but haven't found my own niche as of yet, so I'll keep messing around with it until I do. Any suggestions you have will be appreciated, but it will pay to be fairly technically thorough in describing steps, as I still feel like Photoshop is such a foreign country to me that it might as well be the surface of Mars... "And 'D,'" There is no real texture. I am struggling with the idea of keeping it a digital drawing, rather than diving into a painting, which is what my natural inclination says to do. I'm trying to avoid going with my "tried and true" methods and forging out into new territory, so whenever I start some technique for texture that feels like what I've already done in oil painting, I stop short and back off. Again, any suggestions and tutorials you can link me to at this point will be helpful.
Finally, this is to be my real entry into the monstersandmaidens club's May-June contest: "Jungle Jeopardy," in which case "Annie the Anaconda" will fulfill the role of "monster." Hopefully I'll have this polished up, shaded, and texturized better than it is right now by the time the voting starts...
And, while I was numbering my points two paragraphs ago, I couldn't help but slip into a rather humorous movie quote--an "A+" grade goes to whomever can guess the title of the movie I was quoting with the bold stuff.
Enjoy!

Nice... I'm thinking on a small tutorial that I could give you on how I shade... I'll get back to you on that...
The red-head's foot looks funny to me, but as seeing that you're the body-drawing expert and I'm not, maybe shading will fix it...

I hope shading will help clarify the angle on her foot. And I would of course appreciate a tutorial provided by you. Thanks!

Let me see what I can cook up... but a neat tip now. Dodge and Burn are your best friends. A lot of people actually use different colors to shade and highlight (which works) but it also takes a lot more work. You have to use the blur and smudge tools to get your desired effect or else the airbrush method. Then you have to clean up the parts that you didn't want painted (which happens when using other colors) but with Dodge and Burn the effects are only seen on the color you are working with (providing you are using different layers) and even if you are working with only one layer the tool settings are setup so that you can make the brush as small as you need or as large. So I suggest playing around with the Dodge and Burn tools.

I'd LOVE to see what you can cook up, whenever it shows up. Send me a link, please. You are not the only person to suggest this mysterious "Dodge/Burn." I'll check them out when I next hit the digital world.

Never thought that the natives are using trained hunting serpents to get a hold on innocent students.
Although the serpents looks a bit bored by how easy she was able to constrict her victim.
As long as you keep the uniform colour to all of the body i wouldnt mind too much about shading. Its maybe better to darken (or lighten) certain parts of the picture as a whole to get a focusing light distribution.

WIP? You mean this isn't even finished yet? Bloody hell, can't wait to see how good the finished product looks!
As for the ttle, have you considered perhaps slaves 'of' or even 'to' ?

Thanks! Yes, I considered "of" and "to" and I think I've got a better title in mind anyway. I'll post it with the next WIP.

Excellent drawing ! XD
There is just something weird about young ladies getting captured in jungles (in the Amazon or somewhere else, BTW). They ALWAYS run around in their underwear...O.o
Ok, as you said, the two heroines' field trip turned into a catastrophe, but still...
I mean, I had the occasion to visit several tropical jungle, and believe me, the most you wear the better you are ! At least that prevent you from being bitten by mosquitoes and other very unplesant creatures...
This very stupid and useless comment is proudly brought to you by Carlota, bored at work...

Yes, but this is a very special jungle--there are no insects here, and it's relatively free of mold and fungus. It's more like a garden than a jungle. Yes, that's it. It's a sterilized version of the jungle. Okay, actually, it's just a movie set made to look like a jungle. The girls walked off of the streets of Hollywood into a soundlot that looks like a jungle, and the snake pounced on them--it's really just a Jim Henson mock-up, of course. That's Jim Henson there, with the knife. He's wearing a disguise...
Thanks a ton!

Glorified color book image? Damn, i would buy this coloring book without hesitation!
Anyway, it does have a very retro feel to it. Nostalgic colors. Highlights and shadows would probably be better.

I'm not entirely sure how you are doing this but depending on how many layers you have you could possibly use the drop shadow effect on some places to get your shadowing? BTW, looks awesome

Wish my coloring books had looked like this.
Seriously, if that's a criticism, tell 'em to piss off. There are plenty of artists who don't shade their line art, and a lot of it looks great--just depends on the style and effect you're trying to achieve.
As for the title, how about "All Bound Up and No Place to Go"? No? Hmm, well, how about "Sorority Sex Slaves Soon to be Suffering from Snakebite?" Well, can't say I didn't try.

You and me both. I don't know if it was a criticism, although I didn't take it that way. There is a simplicity and smoothness about this stage that I quite like, and I'll keep a copy of this image file intact even after I start furthering it along. Thanks!

Although the style doesn't need it, I suppose now it's time to try one with PhotoShop shading?

as far as shading goes i would suggest a dark line where you want the shadow and use the blend tool to make it fade into the rest of the image
note select the part you want to shade so you blur things you dont want to
that is my tip: hope it is usefull.

That is really good for a photoshop beginner. Maybe you know about this already, but you can make a full pencil drawing, or inked drawing for that matter, complete with the shading and texture if you will. When adding color, set your layers to "multiply" so that the color doesn't disturb the original lines. That way you can have the best of both worlds.

faile35 In reply to hcollazo2000 [2007-06-16 19:10:16 +0000 UTC]
Yes, you are not the only one to suggest the "multiply" setting, which I have yet to try. I'm on a family trip now out of town, but when I get back I'll see what I can do to try it. Regardless, I thank you for your compliment and for your suggestions!

Well, its looking fantastic, really... 'go for it' with the shading. The 'Dodge & Burn' tools are what I used to get comfortable shading/coloring in photoshop, having since moved on to choosing actual colors and 'ainting' the final version (and isn't it nice that you can just keep saving each step..?). I highly suggest you try this tool (Dodge/burn) to get comfy (select one color and paint away, never having to worry about the edges.. this works great with colored line art anyway), and remember to mess with the settings of the tool to see different results. There are a number of great tutorials on dA regarding digital painting, but you don't want to search forever, I know...

One thing that does bother me though is the natives look like Neanderthals, but then again I could be wrong, I don't know their faces don't look like a refined human's face even for a south american native. Perhaps it's just me..

faile35 In reply to Fatherbrain30 [2007-06-16 19:03:35 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I sketched them a little more "normal-looking" at first, but they didn't look barbaric enough, so I pushed the "primitive-looking aspects" a lot more. So, they do look a little unrefined for South-American people, I admit. I hope no one takes offense over it--I'm not saying those people are evolutionary throwbacks or anything, I'm just trying to tell a pulp-fiction style story.

Don't. The premise of the story is so far-fetched as to defy most realistic parallels anyway. I hope to put a few more normal-looking Brazilian folks in it somewhere, for contrast.
