Description
I jolted awake in my bed, looking up at the ceiling. Sweating for some reason,
I sat up, looking at the clock. Two thirty in the morning, way too early for me
to be up. I began to lay my head back down to the pillow when I realized just how
wet it was.
I got back up, and turned on the light. I had apparently been sweating up a
river during whatever I was dreaming, as my entire bed was soaked. I groaned
as I realized I had also wet myself, which was quite unlike myself, having
not done that since I was five.
As I pulled the sheets off in preparation to remake the bed, I stopped myself.
What did cause me to react like that? I tried thinking, but of course
since my mind was on how drenched my bed had become, I had forgotten almost
everything about the dream. However if I remembered correctly, it had something
to do with me going to the kitchen.
Eventually arriving there, and stepping on the cold, tiled floor of the kitchen,
I regretted my decision of never buying slippers. I mean socks work I guess, but
they aren't the best thing to have to put on at night. I turned to the fridge,
thinking I may as well get a drink while I was out of bed. As I opened the door,
bottles clinking about, I heard something outside, like something had collided
with the wall.
I closed the fridge door,
about to head outside, when I was reminded of the next part of the dream. Something
was out there, and I probably didn't like it. Backing away from the door, I could've
gone back to bed then and there, forget even getting new sheets from the basement.
But curiosity getting the best of me, I went over, took my rifle out of a case, and
took the flashlight from beside the door before heading outside.
Stepping outside, lamenting the loss of my morning robe, which had gotten chewed up
last week from the neighbor's dog somehow getting inside my house, the wind was chilly
as I flicked the flashlight on and looked around for what had caused the racket. Even
as all feelings told me I should abandon this hunt and head back inside, I kept
straining my eyes.
Unfortunately, the rain had other ideas in mind. As I took a fair step out onto the
path behind my house, I slipped and fell, flashlight and rifle dropping with a
clatter onto the ground. Hearing something running, I scrambled to try and get up.
All I managed to see as I got to my knees was a vaguely rodent-like face racing
towards me, not even giving me a chance to raise my-
