Indeed, the colors and the posture, and even the framing contribute to this " sadness" feeling. However I think the sadness would have been even more noticeable if his shirt wasn't so blurry...and perhaps a bit less white, like...dirty, with mud or something...but that's just me!
Yes, I really like the posture, like he fell there and wants to get up, but still doesn't want to, stays with his head fixed on the ground...
What I like most is the cutted-out hand from the body by the shadow, I really really like it

I agree with you quite thoroughly on the shirt... the shirt also used to have a pirate logo on his left shoulder, so at least i managed to take that out. I'm not quite sure how to create the effect you're talking about, but like i said, i really do agree with you, I'll tinker with it a little in photoshop when i get some free time.

I am glad you appreciated my comment, I always try to give as much as I can, but you can see that that is quite time-consumer and that is why I only have about 500 deviation comments while I'm here since almost a year and a half.
