Yes, me too. I'm very lazy and busy to use the pen tool it tooks a lot of time ! But if you have the patience, the results of the pen tool are much more beautiful, in my oppinion xD

It's difficult to tell you, because coloring you learn practicing and watching what's around you.
Maybe you should try coloring using more softly brushes, and making a soft lineart too.
In the hair, you can try putting more shades, more details will go well.
If you use photoshop, you have a lot of options of brushes and opacity.
