Description
Magpie woke early to the sight of early dawn, a blushing pink peered over the horizon. In only a while, there would be the rays of gold soon to follow. She took that opportunity to see it for herself, something she hadn’t done before. The ground was cold, but spring was on the march, and what used to be a blanket of snow covering every blade of grass day in and day out, was now a thin, blanket of white that allowed vegetation to poke through. To her surprise, she wasn’t the only one sky gazing that morning. Ruby was out of her den while her children rested, not noticing as her sister approached her flank. Magpie slowed and then began to stalk her. Before she could get much closer, Ruby spoke in a incandescent voice, a different tone that Magpie had not been familiar with from her.
”Thank you Magpie.”
Magpie raised her head and rested her back as she walked beside her sister, wagging her tail. ”Don’t mention it.” She sat her fluffy rump side-to-side with her sister’s and they watched the sky together. They were quiet through most of it, Magpie hadn’t felt the need to make conversation. Really, what was said had already been done. Magpie already knew that her sister appreciated her help, and there was nothing more she could have asked for from Ruby. She was family, and she would drop just about anything to help her. Those years of separation, where she felt like their bond was broken and irreversible, was now healed over, like the rolling morning after a cold night sky. Magpie leaned her heavy head against Ruby, and she didn’t flinch in response.
”I think maybe I should stay here with you.” Magpie muttered slightly, then Ruby moved her eyes to look at her. ”What about your family back in Chandor?” She responded. Magpie had expected a lighter reaction, more encouraging. ”Well they don’t need me.” She said, only half convincingly. She could see the corners of a smile on Ruby’s mouth, and she began to lift the weight of her head off her own. ”Magpie, what made our bond special before was that we all had each other’s backs. Now, we all have our families, and we still find a way to be close. You helped me Magpie, with my children, but the ones that helped you, when I left, are the family you should stay with.” There was a soft chill, a soft silence as the sun began to poke out into eyeshot. ”Your mate, you children, your friends, your ranking...it’s all back at Chandor.” Magpie twitched an ear. She hadn’t talked about how Davis, who she loved but was not mated to, had left, later along with thier children, a long time ago. She had been so wrapped up in Ruby’s own misfortune that she hadn’t mentioned her own. Magpie frowned, attempting to feign off her misery as a sign of disappointment.
”Perhaps you are right.”
”Listen Magpie, I don’t-“
”No, no I get it. You are right, I just like having my sisters with me.” Magpie smiled.
Ruby smiled back at her and nudged her shoulder. ”So do I.” And suddenly, out of the wake of morning light came a small, dark shadow in the sky that caught both the sisters’ attention. It was a raven, and it cawed as loud as a red-tailed hawk. It circled around them, diving down and nearly colliding against Magpie’s back before Ruby snapped her jaws at it, convinced it was trying to steal her sisters’ feather. ”Annoying pest.” She gritted through her teeth, but Magpie had the opposite reaction. She remembered ravens fondly through her time with Davis, and one had even visited her a few times after he disappeared. She welcomed the approach of the raven and trotted after it. Ruby lifted an eye ridge and joined Magpie as they began to follow the black bird. ”We are following a raven…” Ruby stated in a disapproving tone of voice, but Magpie did not respond, nor did she stop, as the two of them continued to trail after it. Ruby could suddenly smell the faint scent of the borders of Aryn begin to fade from her senses and she slowed to a stop. ”Magpie. We are out of Aryn’s borders. We should go back.” The raven began to mockingly caw as Magpie stopped, flying back and forth around her. She turned towards her red furred sister and said, ”This raven wants me to follow it, Ruby!"
Her sister looked wildly perplexed and heaved a sigh, ”Chandor is in the opposite direction! This raven probably is just leading you to a kill!” “Then, I shall be well fed before I go back!” Magpie barked back. However, she didn’t get far before she made her head turn to see Ruby standing where she was, quiet and lonesome. Her heart constricted, and she ran back to rejoin her sister, licking her sister’s cheek affectionately. ”Good luck Magpie. Try to cover your scent if you run into Vektren territory. My packs’ relationship with them is very tense.” Ruby responded. ”That so?” Magpie asked, and Ruby nodded. ”Just be careful.” . Magpie winked, and said as she departed from her, “You don’t need to worry.”
As she began to fall away into the bright pink of the horizon, with that pesky raven, Ruby returned to her family, back where she left them.
(I wrote this story a few months ago, but didn't have the motivation to put it with a picture until now, a month into spring haha. I hope you enjoyed it. I love writing about my girls.)
