Description
Hi! Fake Kraid here, seeking one or more talented sprite artists for an ambitious project! I am working on a freeware 2D RPG using the Game Maker 8 engine, together with a couple of concept artists and possibly some composers, if I can ever get in contact with them. *throttles all musicians for being so flaky*Ahem. In any case, I would like to discuss the project with anyone who is willing to help. I am not looking necessarily for a professional-level artist, since I cannot afford to pay you, but I want someone with enough skill to do work that will enhance the game, not detract from it. I am willing to work with more than one spriter if necessary, so don't worry about being overloaded.
The RPG will be styled, if I can manage it, after the late SNES era games of that type, such as Final Fantasy V and VI, Dragon Quest VI, and Lufia II. Perhaps, to a lesser extent, Chrono Trigger as well, though the combat system is not the same. In any case, I have extensive concept writing to show anyone who is interested in the project, so don't worry about that. The important things to know for now are:
1. The graphics are all going to be 2D. I may play around with transparencies in some of my battle effects and such, but there will be no advanced graphical elements to the game.
2. A 'pixel' style seems to me the best suited for the game, what with its concept, but I am willing to consider other styles of game art if an artist can show me something good.
3. The game will not be extremely animation-heavy. Battle effects will be the bulk of it, I suspect. Beyond that, the player characters will need animations for the battle screen and the overworld, and NPC's will need rudimentary overworld animations. Enemies will for the most part not be animated; at most, a few bosses might shift sprites now and again, sort of like Cagnazzo, Valvalis, and Rubicant in Final Fantasy IV. There will be very few overworld animations besides the characters/NPC's and maybe water/lava/sludge effects, a puff of smoke out of a chimney, and the like. So, while some experience with animated sprites is needed, the work should not be overwhelming.
4. As I said, I have concept artists for at least two of the game's art needs - monsters and characters - so the artist(s) who decide(s) to help me will not have to come up with everything themselves. Even where there will not be concept art, I will be able and willing to provide any amount of artistic direction needed. I have a very clear vision for how I want the game to turn out; I just lack the artistic skill to bring it to life myself.
4A. That last point should not be taken to mean that I do not intend to allow any artistic freedom to my team. I am not a control freak. I have the vision if needed, but I also like surprises, and I enjoy working with artists. That was purely intended to allay fears of nebulous demands.
5. In the spirit of the last two points, I will share this much at least here. The game's setting will be fantasy, with monsters of all shapes and sizes (and spiritual natures; but let's not get too complicated here). If I had to approximate a 'time period', I would say for most of the world resembles late Middle-Ages technologically, though very much fantastic, with one nation in particular having a sort of 'Atlantean' air about it, since Alchemy has been invented there and sparked something of a technological revolution. That place will be, not quite 'steam-punk', but 'fantasy scientific' at least. The settings will range from grassy fields to mountain caves, tropical jungles, pine forests, deserts, a frozen tundra, ancient ruins...did I mention this is not a small project? I'm probably going to do it in installments, but we'll see.
If you need any more information, please let me know. Thanks so much for your interest!

Holy cannelloni! I wasn't expecting to get a reply about this anymore! That was AGES ago!
Hmm...the project I was talking about before has been placed on long-term hold due to lack of resources. But, I AM working on a different project, an RPG of a much smaller scale with more limited goals, and in an NES style. If you want, you can help with that. I can send you a sample of the game's engine (I've got most of the menu system, a basic overworld and room engine, and fully functional shops and inventory, but still need to polish the overworld and add the battles). All the art you see in it was done by me, but I'd be glad to have the help of someone better, and if what I see in your gallery is totally original, you can probably do better. Just let me know where to send stuff, and we can talk it over.

If you some help, advise, whatever, and the history side, basicaly Point #5, let me know. Also, might want to check out a comic called 'Artesia' by Mark Symlie. [link] (comics)

Wow, that does sound quite big. I'm intrigued, and possibly interested in partaking, but I'd need a lot more info before considering joining an artistic project team :]

Okay. Well, first of all, how old are you? For several reasons I've decided not to take help knowingly from anyone under 18, in case money ever does get involved in this.

Yeah, sorry. You do good work, I can see that from your gallery, but I'm just trying to avoid trouble. Thanks anyway, though.

You commented on this to tell me you're not interested? That seems like a waste of energy, but I guess no harm done.
