Description For Improvement-Club

Kasterr asked for some help on coloring metal, a theme I LOVE

First thing?
IGNORE THOSE COMENTS SAYING THIS IS A HARD THING TO DO

I know, everything worth the effort is somehow hard, specially if you're new at it, but hey, the harder you think it is, the harder it will be, take it easy and learn to love it's complexity =v=

That said, the most important thing is to always keep in mind that metal is about hard contrast, specially when polished. You'll see shadows well defined and shinny lights, very few materials have this reflective capacity so use it to your favour.

As (I hope) you can see on the purple square, first thing is to set a base color. Gray was kasterr's selection, so I worked it out. On the boot, I used a darker/redish gray (sounds funny, but yeah, on red's palette I just went on the darker and grayish side, those differences are very subtle, but you'll learn to see them) and used it to apply a first set of shadows. As stated above, hard shadows, NO BLUR. If you want to make it look interesting, add some lines that follow the surface's lines. You could let it be at this step, but for more drama, add a second set of deeper shadows. My personal advie here is to use cold colors on shadows (blue, purple, green) and to avoid using black.. it's easier but looks dull, besides, black is a very dirty and absolute color, it's easier playing around with the rest of the rainbow

Oh yes, for the drama effect (?) Add deeper shadows and lights. I have a tip here: place lights above the lineart so they do look shinny! And sometimes, use two colors, as in light green and then lighter yellow to make it extra shinny... Again, try to run away from white.

The same applies if you're making golden armor. Over there, use dark greens and oranges, even red for shadows and yellow and light green for lights
On BLACK armor (lovelovelove) it's even easier, you just have to make lights using ANY color... and as for white armors, well, light blue, green and purple are your best friends

Hope this is of help
Have an awesome day people!
