Description Hot damn, FINALLY this is done! Woot! After about sixteen elapsed hours of work, starving all day (I was so involved with this that I forgot about food up until now) and somehow taking a pee break without meaning to every time American Psycho by Treble Changer turned up on my playlist, this is done! Now it goes hi-ho, into the port-fol-io! (Okay, that was lame, but I'm happy.)

Now I think I have license to relax. And take another pee break.

Special thanks to and especially for their constructive critique. Without their input, especially DreamlessWings ', I could not have finished this! Thank you guys! I love you!

Sighthound collars! Whee!

I saw all the other sheets and it looks like you've been doing a lot of work on this. Loved the pose pack a few deviations back (or ahead depending on which way one's going), and this turnaround is great as well.

So going with the cheetah relation, does this mean she can only run really fast for short spurts before needing to rest up again?

Aw man, I had this reply all written out days ago and my browser froze - time to hack at it again! (Sorry for the delay! )

I believe this whole model pack all totalled took me between twenty-five and thirty hours. The turnaround itself was around sixteen plus hours and everything else I think was about three to four hours of work. The poses took a while because I actually drew more than I posted because I was picky and I was really surprised how long it took me to do the expression sheet, since I never entirely redrew a single one. It's probably classed as cheating but I used a basic head to do all the others. (Lame, but hey, it worked.)

Ummm pepper wolves are very interesting. They have a little more endurance than cheetahs, I believe from having to go much further to actually find prey (though I know cheetahs often have to hunt hard too) because their habitat is extremely desolate. After a hunt they usually are not as physically wasted as a cheetah (unless the sun is high) and they are more gregarious health-wise, less prone to infections and whatnot. (I've heard that cheetahs are actually rather delicate. Pepper wolves are not.) I think they can only sprint for around 1-2 kilometres but they can lope much further without tuckering out too much. (Though of course their stamina depends on what time of day it is. Like a lion they're not too keen about catching midday meals. If they were to hunt during the full sun their body temperature would sky rocket and that obviously wouldn't be good. I'd say they generally wait until late afternoon to start tracking prey.) When they are looking for prey they usually trot to cover distance unless they are lazy or it's still hot out or they are in a hurry to get somewhere, which is of course when they would lope. When they do actually get into a hunt situation they are aided by their pack hunting strategies, like one where they do a relay. The first hunter starts the prey and chases it towards the next who either chases it to a third/fourth or back to the first for the kill or makes the kill itself. There usually isn't any more than four adult hunters in a family. They also love ambushing! XD (What predatory animal doesn't? The less effort the better!)

I hate when that happens!! It looks like it took me a while to get back. That pack does look like it took a while but go you for getting it all done.

Thanks for the explanation. That they hunt in packs actually would be pretty lethal combined with super speed and endurance. So they're almost like sighthounds only mostly feline. Cool!
(now I need to catch up on what I've missed around here the past month).

Good luck with your catching up! XD Usually takes me ages!

They're really good predators but the huge fire cats which they share their hunting territories with (unwillingly mind you haha) have an ace up their proverbial sleeves which the wolves just can't beat - they can move in the heat of the day when every other animal has to rest. They can't move as fast as a pepper wolf though. My theory of how they hunt is that they pretty much stalk things into the heat until the sun makes their prey overheat, than they just kill them. The kiri probably have some not-quite-nonsense mythology or something based on pepper wolves hunting at night and fire cats hunting at day.

She's so cute in this! I kept seeing your progress on Tumblr, and seeing the final product at last is just fabulous I love her tweaked design, especially in the improved anatomy. And so many facts! It's great to see you putting so much research into a character.

I'm a little curious about one thing, though, is this considered a legit turn-around? I always thought each pose needed to be in the exact same position, just in different angles, but the second pose is clearly off with the ears pinning back, and the third with the tail swooshing to the side instead of in the middle. Just something I wondered while looking at it!

I'm glad you enjoyed watching the progress! I had fun posting it, especially because it was an excuse to stop drawing for a few moments haha.

Yes, it's legit! I had all the poses exactly the same (just from different angles) but my buddy ~DreamlessWings who majored in character design in the year after me (and who had a waaaay better character design teacher than me - my year kind of got shafted - AND who is working in a studio right now) told me to change up the poses, because it's more interesting for directors (and pretty much everyone) to look at - and plus, ~DreamlessWings said that it gives hints to the character's personality which is important for giving the animators an idea of the character that they're working on. They do this in the industry - I've seen it before in art books from animated things and on other deviant's pages, but it never quite clicked that it was correct with the industry before ~DreamlessWings told me to do it. It meant more time spent because I had to change some of the posing but it was worth it, because my turnaround is a lot more interesting to look at now and I believe it's more masterful. (Plus I think slight pose changes like this are considered okay because it's REALLY hard to get poses exactly the same from angle to angle, so this is probably an excuse in the industry to loosen up.)

Ooh, that's really interesting then! I definitely think it's more nice to look at too. Makes it a bit more... lively? I guess as long as the pose isn't so off that it's screwing up how to draw the character it doesn't cause much harm. xD (and oh my gosh it iiiis hard! I've had a difficult enough time trying to do it in comics, none the less so technically correct on characters sheets! )

Haha and I didn't even change my poses that much! ~DreamlessWings wanted me to do more! XD Turnarounds are evil hard, which is why I'm extra glad now that the pose doesn't have to be exactly the same from angle to angle. I'm not doing character sheets for every character in TPF and you'd have to pay me to turnaround a dragon (wings! EW!) but I am considering turning around an as-elf drakoon... just to show the armour. (Probably Ki or Keel BUUUT neither is a typical drakoon kit-wise so fail-ness.) For most of my characters I think I'm just going to stick to basic sketches haha. No use making my brain implode over something as complicated as a turnaround lol. (But they're kind of useful because your brain only has to implode once and then you have a really big awesome reference that tells you how to draw the character in the future, so less brain implosion! Hopefully anyway lol.)

Oh goodness, a dragon turn around would be murder 8C

Pfff, that would be really neat to show the armor! And alas, there are many times in one's life where they can implode their brains, but conserving said times for major importance is the key!

- desert animals have furry, webbed paws which protect their vulnerable paw pads from the scorch of the ground.
-------> Ground? I'd better say "sand" if we speak of near-ocean or Mediterranean type deserts. If we speak of cold deserts like, say, Gobi, then there will be different sorts of soil.

Btw also some desert animals have long eyelashes for additional eye protection, like camels for example.

I said ground because it's more generalized and refers to more ecosystems. I knew about the eyelashes but I forgot that one.

Lovely work Falcolf! I really like Phiro's markings and her overall confirmation. She definitely looks like she's from a desert climate. Great colors too.

omgsh its Phiro she's one of my fav characters of yours c: and I like the species in general too. they're just so neat. I love their design, fur pattern and anatomy. I read through everything you wrote about them xD I love them so much. I need to draw Phiro sometime...because it just seems like fun c:

I'd also say you did a really good job on this ^^ doing the whole different views of the character is done really well c: its one of the things I'm not very good at yet xD

Yeee!!! I'm so happy you like her! She's one of my favourites to draw and she's a nice person too. She's a ball to draw.

As I always say - practice makes perfect eventually! Just keep at 'er with dedication and eventually you'll be able to draw whatever you want if that's what you truly desire.
