Description
This picture has a mega high resolution. Before anyone goes 'lakes aren't that colour' yes they are. In the mountains. It's from rock flour.
Kazik chases down his dinner. I love this picture a lot - it's my current desktop background. I finally figured out how to do mountains with snow too, though it still looks kinda shitty. Same with the foreground. Oh well, can't have everything in life, can we? Maybe next time.
Yes, starfers think horses are delicious. I needed a predator that hunted my favourite animal.
Mr. Stallion there doesn't fancy his fate. If anyone has a problem with the fact that I included his man parts, then they shouldn't look at their pet Fido when he rolls over displaying his when he wants a belly rub. Animals don't wear underwear. It's a fact of life. Not including their male parts is a severe anatomical fault, though I can understand why people do it. I'm just obsessed with proper anatomy.
Rawr. I like Kazie's hooves.
Now I'm blathering.
No critique k?
All my critters are getting full anatomically correctness from now on. It just doesn't look right when I don't add a certain part that I've only added for the first time in this picture.
For WIPs of this picture and some tips on using Photoshop for lineart and stuff, check out my scraps gallery!
EDIT APRIL 23rd 2008: On excellent critique from my teacher, I added some filters to make the mountain and the other side of the lake look more distant. (A blue one and a white one.) I also coloured the lines to make the characters stand out less, put a layer of shadow on the lake and added general detail to the ground beneath Kazik's and his prey's hooves. I also added a small amount of dust, all to make them look less like they were floating. I think the picture looks much improved now!
It's also now a print.

This is a gorgeous piece! Simply wonderful. He has a very interesting design!
I guess it sucks when whatever's hunting you is the same size, and shares some of the same anatomy.
I'm very impressed by this piece, and plan on looking through your gallery to maybe see more recent pieces!

a predator with hooves does not seem all that intimidating. only thing scary about him his his size. how the heck do they bring down prey if they can not hold onto it?

i think his tail has something to do with his abilities as a hunter, besides his intelligence.

I have been looking at allot of your art today and I keep wanting to comment.
But all I can think of is Wow...
This kind of reminds me of one of my carnivores.
A bit more wolf-like though. As they don't have hooves and the tail is different.
They are opportunists and eat whatever they can find though because of their pack mentality they prefer bigger prey to take back to their family.
They are known as "The Guardians". Their species name comes from the Japanese word for Keeper.
They are rather complicated yet simple at the same time.
I wish I wasn't so afraid of someone stealing them.
If I wasn't I'd put all my creatures on here for people to see.
But I have developed an odd sort of attachment to them and am afraid to lose them.

Oh, I didn't realize Kazik had equine-like lower limbs! That's an interesting combo. This means he gets to do all his killing with his teeth, rather than a claw/bite combo.

Yep he's a weird looking critter
Starfers generally try to trip their prey, or just grab their throat and suffocate them. They also like running them off cliffs... they ain't picky.

Will they eat carrion, too? Just wondering if they were opportunistic enough to pick up mountain sheep or deer that had suffered an accident.

ooo it definetley looks better! how did you do the colored lineart? how do you draw horses?!?!?!?!?!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Falcolf In reply to DragonRider788 [2008-04-25 22:48:49 +0000 UTC]
Coloured lineart is easy. So long as you have the lines drawn on a seperate layer in PS, all you have to do is lock the transparent pixels and colour away.
Drawing horses is rather harder to explain, but it's the same principle as drawing a wolf. Use circles and other shapes for various parts for underlining structure.
Horses are one of the hardest animals to draw though....

Yep! But only in the high mountains. Rock flour gets ground down from the glaciers (basically dust) and gets washed into the rivers, making the lakes these pretty shades. Thanks!
