Description
Subject: Escavian Coastal Red PineExperiment: Painting scenery with lineart.
Time: 2 hr
Comments: I could agonize on this longer but my stomach hurts and I want to go home and rest. I've had a bad two weeks - not only have I had evil insomnia, but I've also had a pretty sore tummy, so I want to eat before it gets painful. Tomorrow I'm going hiking, so that should help too. (Also with my storyboard, which I've been agonizing about.)
This will probably end up being an illustration for the project I'm working on.
Coastal Red Pine trees (another example of parallel evolution) are one of my favourite creations for Rimer. After deciding that yes, it was theoretically possible to have a red pine tree (and hey, it's another world, different plant rules may apply) I threw them into the manuscript of Ashes of Hope. They're inspired, a bit grimly, by a certain infestation of a little bastard of an animal called a pine beetle, which is the scourge of my home province's forests. Pine beetles are only really killed off by good cold snaps - -30C - and we haven't had many of those in the past decade or so, so the pesky beetles are spreading. Why are these stupid bugs so important? Because they kill our pine trees, which turn scarlet, then die, becoming kindling for forest fires. (One reason British Columbia is a venerable torch every summer. STILL I'd rather deal with forest fires than a volcano eruption or earthquake. *shudders* You know you live in Vancouver when you only have to mention 'the big one' and everyone knows what you're talking about. It's predicted that within this century Vancouver as well as everything else touching the Jaun de Fuca fault line will experiance one helluva bad earthquake, the sort that can flatten cities.) This is one reason I want to leave Vancouver. The earthquake might not effect us as much as cities like Los Angeles, but we're probably going to have at least one nasty tsunami. I DON'T WANT TO BE HERE WHEN THAT HAPPENS!
So anyway, there's my paranoid rant (and crappy picture) for the day.

I really love how the pine tree's curling like that above the ledge there. I feel a lot of symbolism from this one picture. So, you did a really nice job with the speedie here. <3
About the earthquake thing, is it a hypotecthical thing or is Vancouver close to a geologically active location? I'm just curious because my attentions perks up whenver someone talks about stuff like that. I'm such a dork like that, sorry.

lol, it's a real thing. (Dun worry, I'm a science nerd too. I'm still trying to figure out the science behind the evolution of a lot of my species that I've created.) The fault line is out to sea, but it's definately there. Here's a map. [link] Irritatingly enough, most maps that I found don't even mention Canada. Here's an article about the science involved [link] and, short form, why this 'Big One' is such a huge hazard for Canada. Quite literally, this would be the biggest modern catastrophe in Canada's history. [link] Vancouver has a population of over 3 million. It's the third biggest city in Canada; if something happened, a lot of people would die here.
Thankies very much Antiforce! I hope those links help you out.

I had to ask though because I really forgot where Vancouver was before you showed me the map. I kept thinking it was on the east side of Canada for some odd reason, lol. Now that you showed me the map, I remember watching this documentary on dam failures and it mentioned the geologic activity of Vancouver when it was referring to a specific dam but I forgot it's name, sorry. Big earthquakes are due in many cities, like Vancouver and San Fransisco. Scientists call them "cities waiting to die" or something like that.
Many thanks for the links though! <3 I'll read them in a bit.

Would the dam be the Cleveland Dam? That's the only one I know of here in Vancouver. (It dams our drinking water at Capilano Lake.) You're very welcome!
It's nice talking to another science nut.

Yes, I think that was it. It was a dam that supported a huge lake and it would beyond devastation if it failed. It's nice talking to a science nut whose very friendly. <3

lol I can imagine the Cleveland Dam taking out a lot of West Vancouver, so that makes sense.

I always like the colours you pick for the sky XD
If the earthquake happens, I am pretty screwed T_T
First of all if I am on Granville Island when it happens, the Island will sink, and the bridge will collapse and smush all below it.
If I am on the skytrain, the skytrain will collapse in a violent crash.
If I am at home, the house will crush me.
I worry most about my mom, since she works downtown in a skyscraper :C Scary!

OMG that's horrifying! o.o At least I'm on the mountain side! I have a CHANCE of escape at least!
Aw, but I always end up picking the same ones! You're much better at skies than me.

Wow, this looks great, so much detail in here!
I hope you feel better, and have fun hiking tommorow! And good luck with your storyboard. :3 (isn't it going to be animated or something like that too??)

It's gonna have SOME animation, but it won't be fully animated. Mostly just special effects and maybe some walk cycles thrown in.
Thanks so much!

Heh neat inspiration. That's quite a courageous tree, being out there like that.
As for the earthquake thing.. well, when it happens it happens. If it happens.

I the the swirl of the trunk remind me of the pines along Chuckanut Drive, they twist out of the rocks towards the water like they grew from stone
the water is nice too, especially where you can tell the difference in depth by color, I love the way the waves look as they break
