Description
Shhhhh I'm sneaking this in.OMG I'm in love with this book! If WoF wasn't a real series, this would easily be my favorite book. It's just soooooo good! It has a balance of sad and happy moments, and opens the reader's eyes of dog abuse BIG TIME. And how people in Alaska in the year 1897 traveled for a gold rush. Poor Buck's had his friend die before his own eyes.
And here's how.
Curly's Death (shortened version):
They were camped near the log store, where Curly, in her friendly way, walked up to a husky dog the size of a full-grown wolf. With no warning, the husky leaped in like a flash, sank his teeth into Curly, then leaped back- almost in one motion.
It was the wolf way of fighting. Strike and leap away. Yet there was more to the wolf way than this. Thirty or forty huskies ran to the spot and surrounded the two dogs in a silent circle. Buck did not understand this silent circle, nor why they were licking their chops. Curly rushed the husky, who struck again and leaped aside. He met her next rush with his chest and tumbled her off her feet. She never got back up. This was what the circle of huskies had waited for. They closed in upon her, snarling and yelping in a mass attack. Wishing seconds, Curly was dead.
So that was they way. No fair play. Once down, that was the end of you.
