I can explain that. It's because you grew up in a western country where we read and write from right to left, so your instinct when presented with a blank sheet of paper is to have your character looking in that direction because of the way your hand naturally flows across the page. It's the direction your hand wants to move, so it's the direction your lines move. It's the same reason that most anime art depicts the characters facing to the left.
