Description Arcturus :

"Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mindbogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the drug store, but that's just peanuts to space." - Douglas Adams

Created with Photoshop CS5

An amazing piece of art. Are these very difficult to make? (I also enjoyed your 'Twilight' and 'Slumber').

You get a favorite for the artwork and a 'joy' for quoting Douglas Adams

Thank you very much, there are a lot of tutorials on how to make planets with Photoshop, also starfields and such, it will be hard at first but with practice it gets easier. I love work by Douglas Adams,

here's a link for you to start your space art journey :

Nicely done & congrats on the DD,
but I agree with a few other comments that there are a few inconsistancies from a scientific perspective...
not the least of which is to the best of human knowledge to present, Acrturus is a star not a planet.

While the light flare & shadow of that moon/planetoid LOOK really cool, it's not quite logical.
To see that would require a very large field of particulates.
There would need to be a inner zone of constant collisions there to perpetually replenish the level of "dust" or it wouldn't last long... Especially not in the orbital paths of a planets and moons....
Add to that Arcturus is the fourth brightest star we can see from earth; It's solar "wind" would have swept most of the dust and finer particulates out of that system long ago...

Thanks for your comment, I was actually not Referring to Arcturus the Star, This is what I chose to name the whole piece, it was a name popped to my mind after looking at it when I was done with it (I know Arcturus is a Star), Don't think about it in such Scientific detail (although I love it my self), I had no scientific accuracy in my mind when doing this, I just wanted it have a sense of scale, in a nutshell I took my artistic license and went mad with it

this is really great, however, if the small moon is casting a shadow, then you should be better able to see the distant nebulas in the background because they are less drowned out.
otherwise a phenominal scene.

im loving the scale, the smaller planet on the right is a very nice touch to get that grand feel.
but i must say that the shadow from that planet/moon on the left captures the light the best

First thing that comes to mind is "Man is that a thick atmosphere." Without something to have a change in it's illumination, the planetoid to the far left of the picture would not leave a visible shadow though whatever it is that is casting it's shadow through.

The other is that "That light source must be painfully close." Even on a planetary scale the suns rays are for all intent's and purposes parallel so seeing the planitoid cast such a flared shadow, even at the perspective we're viewing it from where it would naturally seem to get bigger as it got closer, is suspect.

If I didn't hold what I enjoyed to standards, then I'd just shoot up heroin. I'm not saying it's bad, but I AM saying that it could be better and there is nothing wrong with saying so.

meatonthemirror In reply to Vortsukoto [2012-10-26 20:36:56 +0000 UTC]

There's nothing right or wrong here. It's art so it's perfect. It's as is, as is all art.
Personally I like how it looks as though it's sticking out from the picture. It looks almost like it's on a canvas and has texture.

What your saying is comparable to looking at an abstract piece and saying it could be better. Not knowing exactly what the artist is going for you can in no way ever say it could be better. I can only guess he captured exactly what he/she wanted. I'm guessing from looking at the piece that the artist wasn't going for logical exact graphics here.

I think it's neato. well done.

Well, that's the miracle of dA is that the artists has the chance to actually receive comments on their work and use those to reexamine what they've done. If they have made mistakes when attempting realism, then they can use those to become better artists. If not, then they can defend work or ignore their criticism. They most certainly don't need someone playing white knight where there is no injustice to be righted.
