you got it wrong though, unless the planet is bigger than the sun/star that shines on it, the shadow would get more pointy (like this: O> ) as the sun gets closer. It is probably just a huge spaceship with really strong headlights that produces the light~ ...

Eventually yes it would do that, but not over the scales of the picture. In addition, the location of the viewer can make the diminishing shadow appear larger as it get's closer.
