Description
I've been working on a story now for about two years. It will be finished within 2007, I'm sure of it. I'm determined. This photo is based off of said story. The story of one mans insanity. The dogtags I had made after the character and the jacket was a birthday present. Zeb gave me the dress green jacket he graduated with as a PFC in the US Army on September 11th, 2001. My favourite gift, by far. From my muse. Here's a bit of the story so you can be amazed:
They gave him a purple heart. Handed it to him with a smile and a deep-hearted “Thank you.” But they were blasphemers.
A purple heart is awarded to a soldier wounded in battle. Purple hearts were for the men who stood shooting, three feet from the enemy, until they fell. Purple hearts and silver stars were the Oscar’s and the Grammy’s of the war production. For the mindless heroes running blindly towards the Vietcong, leaving a trail of bullets in their wake. Not for Brian Murphy, who ran away from the enemy. Not for a coward.
“What did you tell them?” Brian inspected the medal under the flickering light of his hospital room.
Redd looked over at Brian’s empty bedside table and tried not to sigh. “I told them that you were shot at…”
“Yes?” Brian raised an eyebrow lackadaisically.
“…while leading us all to safety.”
“That’s a lie.” He groaned quietly.
“I did you a favour.”
“You should have just let me die.” He turned his head to the side, stretching the stiff tendon in the side of his neck.
“I don’t ‘just leave’ my men, soldier.” Redd seemed genuinely shocked at Brian’s defiance.
“Apparently not.”
“I saved your life, Sergeant!”
“Yes you did, sir!” Brian yelled, reverting back to boot camp. “Sir, but this soldier doesn’t believe he deserved that, sir!”
“At ease, Murph. This is the pain medication talking.”
“Sir, no it isn’t, sir! This is the pain talking, sir!”
Redd finally let his sigh out and Brian knew he was feeling guilty. “The doctor’s probably going to send you home, Murph. You’re going home.”
Brian didn’t seem phased. He stared up at the ceiling, noting every groove and dip in the white above.
“Isn’t that what you wanted?”
“I wanted to die, sir.” He turned his head back towards the window, watching the sunlight shine a glowing gold on all the soldiers outside, huddled in the shade, smoking their cigarettes, waiting for the rain to come. “You’re a good soldier, Murphy. A good man.” Redd may have been the third person in his entire life to say that and mean it. He was in good company, among Beth and Maggie. But Beth was dead and so was Maggie. Redd would be gone soon and once again, Brian Murphy, Sgt. US ARMY, would be left alone with no one to let him know that he was worth anything. Not even himself.

They belong to the character in my story. By that, I mean I had them made after the character for the photo op.

Well good luck to you with it! I've been working on this story for a good six years now, and I think my problem is I don't know enough of the technicalities. But, I promise, I never stop thinking about it.

Well it's better to overexplain than underexplain. It's easier to correct the first. You just have to keep writing and going with it. What's your story about? Which type of fanfic?

Oh very nice. That kind of thing is very interesting. My boyfriend is doing something similar. Well, similar in that it's an alternate history story. If WWII went very differently. I would be afraid to try something like that for you'd have to think out all the details so they follow logically.

true....in my story because America never joined in the fighting the wars outcome changed.....i mean think about it....imagine if we never knew any of the wars that follow WW1 or anything else......and technology never makes it past the 20's

History major, eh? Well maybe you can help me then. I'm not a History major, but I'm taking a 20th Century history class. You know of any amazing books on the 1940s cultures or the history of 20th century Germany? Or Russia for that matter.

WolfWing9115 In reply to fallinginsane [2011-02-23 14:40:20 +0000 UTC]
unfortunately no.....there are many and I'm currently going through a HIS 1 class it sucks cuz my area of expertise is the late 19th-20th centuries as for the history of 20th century Germany or Russia well Germany obviously put the world through 2 wars and had to be de-militarized twice after WW2 its kinda blurry as to what happens apart from reparations and the dividing of Berlin...Russia had their Revolution in 1917 after they pulled out of the Great War, and up until the late 80's had been the Soviet Union and putting themselves through the Cold War with us and killing troops in Afghanistan during our Vietnam War.......its kinda cool cuz I know a former Soviet trooper who went to Afghanistan and a former Marine who went to Vietnam so everytime I see them I get a major History lesson from both and whats really weird is they're friends!?! thats saying somethin

Psychology is my major. So when I look in to things, I'm interested in Psych first. Haha. The book I chose for my History class is called "Humanity" It's written by a philosopher and is a moral history of the 20th century. I find ways to tie Psych in to everything I do.

No. A soldier I am not. I used to want to join up with the AF but I never did. I wouldn't join without going in as an officer anyway. But I've always been interested in Militaria.

The whole life-giving thing isn't on my top list, either. That's why I'm more in to the AF. Ground pounders are necessary, but I like technicality from a rather safe distance. I'm much too short to ever be a pilot so I would feel pretty safe. Haha.

5'2'' 5'3'' if I'm lucky. 5'4'' is what they told me the limit is. I wouldn't want to do it anyway. For like three months, I thought about being a flight nurse. But the height thing came up again and the fact that I wouldn't want to be a nurse anyway.
