Description The idea for this piece came to me while I was doing some research about patterns in general. I've always been fascinated by patterns, both man-made and those found in the natural world. While I was reading up on the subject I came across another definition of a pattern. It's a devotional pattern; a pilgrimage to a sacred place. In Irish Roman Catholicism it is associated with patron saints, however it is believed to be an even older, pre-Christian tradition. Pilgrims journey to a sacred site, often a holy well or spring. One type of holy spring is known as a Clootie well, a spring or well with a hawthorn tree nearby. These wells are usually associated with healing and pilgrims will circle around the well in a clockwise direction, following the path of the sun and many leave a small offering of "clooties"or strips of fabric on the branches of the trees. It is believed that as the cloth disintegrates the ailment of the afflicted with disappear. Other objects can be found as well, ribbons, charms, religious icons, even clothing.

I incorporated the symbol of the snake, because it represents movement, healing and our connection to the earth. The hummingbirds are a symbol of pilgrimage.

Wow, this is so beautiful, and I love the idea behind it. I have read that by becoming one with the road, the pilgrim joins a kind of universal movement, walking through mythical eternal time. My Finnish ancestors also visited springs, left offerings and circled holy places, often mixing Christian and Pagan elements. The snake was a sacred animal too, the sage could become a snake in a trance and move freely between worlds. In this picture, I like it how the snake becomes the trees - and I don't know what your intention was, but the hummingbirds seem to me just one bird existing in different times simultaneously. I love it how they look so... free and happy, and as if they were looking for something.

Thank you so much for your wonderful comments! I really like the idea of the pilgrim becoming one with the road and thanks for the extra info about Finnish beliefs. I'm always interested to hear details about ancient belief systems. The reason I chose the hummingbirds was to have them symbolically represent the pilgrims on a journey as they typically make very long journeys and in many cultures represent a lightness of being.

I'm glad my comments resonated with you. I can see very well how the hummingbirds would symbolise the lightness of being of the pilgrims.

This is an interesting and beautiful piece. The iconography can vary as well depending on the reference of the viewer. Coming from a Christian background, the idea of healing with a serpent present, since it's an overall symbol of deception and "death" based on the account of Adam and Even in Genesis, was confusing for me at first. So many fascinating details though, I love his leafy tongue.

Thanks so much! Yes, it's so interesting how symbols vary from culture to culture. Snakes in particular seem to represent so many different things to different people. That was part of the fun I had in doing research for this piece. It's always good food for though.
