"Mama! Mama! Guess what I got! Mama!"

The little boy tugged insistently on his mother's dress, excitement shining in his big grey eyes.

"Yes, Eirik, what is it?" His mother laughed, kneeling down next to him.

"I caught a froggy!" he cried excitedly, holding out his hands to show a toad encased in his tiny fingers. The toad croaked in annoyance and kicked its back legs in an attempted to break free of the boy's grip. "Isn't it pretty, mama? You should see how high it jumps!"

"Yes yes, it's very nice," his mother said with a smile, "but I think the 'froggy' wants to go back outside."

"Awwww, but mama, I wanna keep him," Eirik whined.

"You can't keep him," his mother said patiently. "You don't know how to take care of him. You will only hurt him."

"But I already named him!" Eirik insisted. "His name is Loki, and he's my new pet!"

"You named him after the trickster god?" His mother asked, arching an eyebrow.

"Yes, but it's okay, mama. We don't worship Loki, he isn't a real god."

"I suppose you're right," his mother said with a smile. "Though, suppose Loki is a real god. Wouldn't he be offended?"

Eirik pondered this for a moment, looking the toad over as he did. Finally he shook his head, his raven colored hair waving back and forth.

"He won't be offended," Eirik said. "I think he'd be happy to have a really pretty toad named after him."

"If you believe so," his mother chuckles. "Alright, I suppose you can keep him, just don't let your grandfather see him. You don't want him to be served with dinner."

"I won't I'll hide him really good!" Eirik assured her. He then ran out the door, calling out behind him as he did. "I'm gonna ask brother Ragnar for a pouch to keep him in! Goodbye, mama!"

"Be home in time for supper!" His mother called after him. She watched him run, waiting for him to disappear over the hill before smiling and shaking her head.

"Oh, Runa, what are you going to do with him."
