Day 1

Bolt sighed and wiped the sweat off his brow, looking up at what little sunlight filtered through the thick layer of leaves above.  The sun was starting to set, not much time before dark.

“Bolt, are we there yet?”  Domino whined as he trudged along after him.

“No, and if you ask me that one more time I swear I’m shoving you off the nearest cliff,” Bolt snapped.

The two had been making their way through the seemingly-endless jungle for three hours now, searching for anything that might help in their rescue.  In the least they needed a decent place to set up camp.

“My backpack is really heavy, can we stop for a minute?”  Domino whimpered.

Bolt rolled his eyes in annoyance before turning around, ripping the bag off of Domino’s back and slinging it over his own shoulder.  “Keep moving, we don’t have time to stop.”

Domino let out a soft sigh.  He hadn’t meant for Bolt to carry the backpack for him, and he knew his companion wasn’t exactly happy with him at the moment.  Not that he ever was, but today was much worse.  After all, it was his fault they were stranded here in the first place.

They walked for a short while longer, Bolt struggling to carry both backpacks stuffed with salvage and Domino stumbling behind, tripping over fallen branches and roots that jutted from the forest floor.  Eventually they stumbled into a small clearing and Bolt slipped both bags off of his back and onto the ground.

“Start setting up camp,” he instructed as he knelt to dig through his pack.  “We only have about half an hour so be quick about it.”

Domino nodded and started to dig through his own pack, pulling out a tarp he had managed to salvage from their wreck.  After all that had happened, helping set up camp was the least he could do.

“How much food do you have?”  Bolt asked, his eyes watching as the campfire’s flames licked at the firewood they had thrown in.

Domino opened his pack and peeked inside.  “Um, there’s some crackers, dried jerkey, two apples and a can of beans.”

“That will have to do,” Bolt sighed, pulling out his own food stores and setting them on the ground.  “I don’t have much either so we’ll have to ration it.  What about matches, we got any of those?”

Domino nodded.  “Two boxes.  And my canteen is completely full too.”

“Well, at least we won’t dehydrate right away,” Bolt mumbled.  “Any ideas on getting help?”

“No, all of our equipment was wrecked,” Domino said.  “I wasn’t really able to salvage much, even my watch was broken.”

“Well, maybe if you hadn’t of crashed the plane in the first place we wouldn’t have to salvage anything,” Bolt said with a pointed glare.

“It wasn’t my fault!”  Domino protested.  “Something was wrong with the engine!”

“Oh, sure, and Canteen just happened to miss it during inspection,” Bolt growled.  “I don’t think so.  Why Hawk let you fly I’ll never know.”

Domino went silent and turned his gaze to the ground.  He knew it was useless to argue, Bolt never listened to him.

“I’m going to sleep,” Bolt grumbled.  He stood up and stretched before pointing to Domino.  “You so much as touch me and I will end you.”

Domino nodded in response, watching as Bolt crawled into their makeshift shelter.

            Hopefully they’d be rescued soon.

Day 2

Domino had the pleasant experience of being woken up by ice cold water being dumped over his head.

“Hey, lazy, get up,” Bolt snapped.  “You gonna sleep all day or are we actually going to get something done?”

Domino groaned and sat up, wiping the water off his face.  “What time is it?”

“Dawn,” Bolt replied.  “Come on, get up, we need to get moving.”

Domino got up and slung his backpack over his shoulder.  “Cheery as ever,” he grumbled under his breath.

Bolt turned to face him and glared.  “I’m sorry, did you say something?”

            “No,” Domino whimpered, shrinking back.

            “Didn’t think so.”

Bolt turned back around and started walking with Domino following close behind.

            “Hey, Domino?”

Domino perked up and adjusted his cracked glasses.  “Yeah?”

“Don’t fall behind,” Bolt said, keeping his gaze fixated ahead of them.  “Because if you do I’m not coming back for you.”

Domino’s expression fell.  Maybe it had been wishful thinking, but he had been hoping that was going to be an apology for dumping water on him.  Even though he and Bolt didn’t exactly get along, he never expected that.

The two walked in silence.  Domino wasn’t entirely sure they were going the right way, but considering Bolt was the one with more field experience, Domino wasn’t going to question him.  That and he was pretty sure any arguments would just end in more death threats.

Bolt stopped abruptly, almost causing Domino to run into him.  “You hear that?”

Domino listened, hearing nothing but the chirping of birds and the trilling of various insects.  “Hear what?”

Bolt listened a moment more before turning to the left.  “Over there, sounds like water.”

“I don’t hear anything,” Domino said with uncertainty, “are you sure that’s what that is?”

“Positive,” Bolt said.  He started towards the sound.  “Come on, we need to fill up.”

Domino frowned but stayed silent as he followed Bolt through the brush.  He knew he shouldn’t question no matter how badly he wanted to, but he had a really bad feeling about this.  The feeling only got worse when Bolt pushed back a branch, revealing a small pond with a trickling waterfall.

“Ha!  See, I told you I heard water!”  Without hesitation he knelt down and began to refill the small canteen hooked to his backpack.

“I’m not sure about this,” Domino said, craning his neck back and spotting a corpse hanging from a tree.  It looked like it was tied up with strings from a parachute.  That wasn’t exactly promising.  “Maybe we should wait.”

“Hey, if you want to get dehydrated and die be my guest,” Bolt said before taking a gulp out of his canteen.  “But I actually plan on going home.”

“But it’s not filtered,” Domino insisted.  “What if it makes you sick?”

“Oh please,” Bolt scoffed. “I know what I’m doing, I’m not going to get sick.”

    Day 3

“…I think I’m gonna be sick.”

Domino looked over to see Bolt curled up, clutching his stomach.  “Are you sure?”

“Pretty sure,” Bolt whimpered.  “How did this even happen?  I made sure all the food was good before we ate it and everything.”

“Maybe it was the water?” Domino suggested.

“I was not the water,” Bolt snapped.  “The water was perfectly fine, shut up about it.”

Domino opened his mouth to comply but stopped with a frown.  “…No.”

“What?”  Bolt asked, his eyes narrowing.

“No!” Domino shouted, standing up.  “I won’t shut up about it!  Drinking that water was a really stupid thing to do and even though you keep saying I’m wrong and I’m not!  I’ve spent hours in my lab analyzing this stuff so, unlike you, I actually know what I’m talking about.  Now, if you want to keep drinking that stuff so you’ll get sick and die, fine.  Do it.  But if you want to live long enough to get out of here then just shut up and listen to me for once!”

Bolt stared at Domino in shock.  Never seeing the other man lose his temper like that, he was at a complete loss for words.

“So, are you going to listen to me and let me help you?”  Domino asked, crossing his arms.

    Bolt nodded in response.

“Good,” Domino said.  “Now lie down, okay?  You can have some of my filtered water and I’ll get something light for you to eat.”

Bolt nodded and lied down, waiting patiently for Domino to bring him food and water.  It didn’t take him long, and soon Bolt was sipping out of his canteen and nibbling on the crackers.

“I’ll be back,” Domino said, leaning his pack against a tree.  “You stay here and get some rest, I saw a guy a while back and I think he might have something we can use.”

“Mmmmk,” Bolt mumbled, curling up into a ball.  “You do that.”

Domino watched him before turning and walking down the path they had taken earlier.  He sure hoped he found something that could help them.  As calm as he seemed, it was very possible that Bolt had e-coli which, even with medical treatment, could easily kill him.  They needed a way out of this jungle, and they needed it fast.

    Day 4

Bolt awoke with a pined groan.  Everything hurt, and it didn’t help that it felt as if someone was driving a screwdriver into his skull.

    “Oh, you’re awake!”

Bolt tuned, greeted by a pair of mismatched green and blue eyes.  “Huh?  Oh, yeah.”

“You feeling any better?” Domino asked.

“Worse, actually,” Bolt grumbled.  “I don’t know what was in that water, but whatever it was hates me.”

“I figured as much,” Domino sighed.  “Luckily you won’t have to deal with it too much longer.”

            “What?”  Bolt asked.

Domino help up a beat up satellite phone with a crooked smile.  “Can you believe it even had a charger powered by kinetic energy?  They should be here in just a few minutes.”

“Man, you are a lifesaver,” Bolt said with a sigh of relief.  “Wait, how long was I out?”

“A little over a day,” Domino said.  “I didn’t see any reason to wake you up.”

“What?” Bolt cried, sitting up in a panic.  “We need to hurry and get everything pa—“

He stopped when he saw the fire was put out and everything was neatly packed away into their bags.  “You cleaned everything up?”

“Well, yeah,” Domino said with a shrug.  “I needed something to do.”

“Oh.  Well, good job I guess.”

            “You’re welcome.”

Bolt opened his mouth to say something else but stopped when he heard the sound of chopper blades.  “Wow, you weren’t kidding when you said a couple minutes.”

“You know Hawk, fast flier,” Domino said with a grin.  “Here, I’ll help you up, I can come back for the packs after you’re in the helicopter.”

“Oh, um, thanks,” Bolt said.  He reached his hand out and Domino pulled him up, putting Bolt’s arm over his shoulder and supporting him.  Bolt hesitated a moment before adding, “You know, for everything.”

Domino grinned.  “Hey, what are friends for?”
