Description
This is my homage to Tsukushi, Jennadelle, Mei-san, Pu-sama, Bara-chan, and Satougaki (and even Bengal, to a degree). I tried to do as much detail as I possibly freaking could. It's all on the same sheet of 8x10 paper, nothing cut and pasted in Photoshop as I sometimes need to do.I'm always jealousy-struck by the abilities of the aforementioned artists, and I feel like everything I do falls short in several major ways. So I decided to work on something major. One way I feel I need improvement is developed detail. Another is backgrounds. This one doesn't have a full BG, but I did put all my effort into that one building. (I didn't want to highlight/shade it, or else it would complicate things.)
Sadly, the sketch started out as a not-so-perfect anime girl, which is why her face is crooked and her body is stiff, and is that a hat? If so, how teh f--- is it staying on her head? The wings look the same as in Gothic Rei, and she looks a little like Garnet. And I *STILL* cant get the hang of flowy, detailed hair (like the kind Mei-san does) so her hair literally looks like grass.
And I didn't color it fully because I tend to cover up my lines when I do that, and since I'm proud of my pencil work, I wanted to showcase it. Besides, I can't seem to get the hang of my tablet OR Painter 7. Anyone know of some good tutorials?

.5mm pencil on 8x10 cardstock printer paper - 4 hours
CG with Photoshop 7 and mouse - 3 hours
knowing I finally put effort into something - priceless.
And don't try to find a meaning for the title. I just like the word discrepancy.

Ah, you're being too hard on yourself. I didn't even notice the way her head's a little lopsided until you pointed it out and I went back for a good, close look, myself, and the rest of it (the hat, the hair, etc) look just fine to me.
The only question I have is, where can I get a sword like hers?

Despite the aforementioned faults you listed, it still looks fantastic. Sorry, I don't know any good tutorials to help you. Keep practicing with your tablet, it's like wine, it gets better with age. The more you use it the better you get at it. I'm still adjusting to my tablet, but I'm getting there. Keep at it.

I like it man! And do not fret, the crooked face is nothing to be ashamed of... for it is the "flaws" that sometimes creates beauty, individuality (not always associated with beauty). Think about it.

Instead of just giving you worthless, useless praise which would in no way help you to improve, I'll give you some critique.
The stuff that you pointed out: grassy, stiff hair; crooked face; stiff body etc. The unshaded BG is like a pin in the eye, sticking out in contrast from the shaded, highlighted character.
The perspective on the "building" in the back is wrong. The branching arm gets larger as it gets closer to the foreground, but the main pole doesn't have that same sense of depth. You could be making the arm bendy, but it doesn't seem like that to me.
Your style is like that, but this head is seriously waaay too big for the body. It looks like it could topple off anytime when the neck snaps.
The wings, the left wing doesn't really seem to stick out from her body, with that mechanical thing, and the right wing seems to be coming out from an odd angle, as if the mechanical bit for the right wing sticks out strait backwards, but the feathers suddenly bend to point to the right.
The mechanical detail on the sword, her armour and the left wing are all very wll done. A very good piece overall, but those little things could all be improved upon.

I think you did a wonderful job with this drawing. Has a lot of Mucha influance in it. Soem of his illustrations didn't really have BG, just flat pattern with a structure like you have. yeah I agree with you on some of the formal issues you mentioned. like her face being crooked. As for the hat, who cares if it doesn't look like it's really on her head, it looks good and if you look at some anime drawings, you can see the same thing in a few of them. The straight hair really fits with the wings and the techologic elements you have going on behind her. The detail you've put into this drawing is amazing.

Wow Matt. This looks wonderful. Though I would have to slap the back of your hand for what you put yourself through. I know sometimes its hard not to judge our artwork by looking at others.. Its only natural.. but I think each person has their own little magic that no one else has. And indeed there is a little Matt Page magic. So.. you shouldn't be to hard on yourself so much. You are a great artist and you put hard work into what you do.. and you've got to respect that.
^-^ I love the detail you did add to this though. I would so give you a bag of cookies and more if i could, just on the detail. I adore the wings and her outfit. ;-; Even with the simple wings and her body coloring.. it makes her stand out. The eyes the most.

I am amazed at the amount of detail put into this. You're right about pu-sama's and jennadelle's talent for detail, and I think you achieved exactly what you had set out to do. I've always admired the way you do wings. keep up the great work and I look always look forward to see your work.

Beautiful details! Check them all out! I suppose the only thing I noticed that's kind of odd, is how flat she looks (Not talking about her chest.. Lol.). *Tips head.* But that could be my sick head. Lol. Look at those sock/gloves.. The ring on them looks so cool.. Armored dress, heh. Awesome sword, reminds me of something off Morrowind.. Something the dwarves would have made. *Claps* I like alot! =3!

i love the detail in this. the background and the wings espeically get to me...they look so great. yeh...es a good thing you didn't color it fully...it would be a shame to cover all the beautiful detail. and if you ask me the coloring looks pretty kool jus like that. i love the main blue...ish color
