This is a Yellowjacket Wasp, or if I am not mistaken, from the species Vespula Germanica. Nice.

Is this the basic yellow jacket? Never seen one close enough to notice the interesting designs on the back, but I have seen them fly away with raw hamburger pieces twice their size, as well as wreak havoc in a campsite. Smearing jelly on a rock placed in a shallow pan with soapy water is an effective way to deal with them.

Feisty little critters,. I don't like these much, but they are a wonder of nature,. They look very elegant.
