Description
Hornet Moth
Similar in appearance to the Lunar Hornet Moth it can be distinguished by the yellow patches on the head and shoulder and a black collar. The adults can be found resting on poplar trunks after they have emerged in June.
They overwinter at least twice as larvae for the first and sometimes second winter and as fully grown larvae in cocoons for the second or third winter. They mainly feed on the wood just below the bark surface near ground level and emerge from a hole near the base of the trunk.

It's a little confusing, you write some info about identifying hornets, you even mentioned Sesia apiformis and yet, you describe your photo as a hornetΒ (Vespa crabro)Β ??Β Β
Β Well, it's not a Hymenoptera on that leaf,Β just a cute hornet clearwing moth

thankyou very much !! I didn't know at all..and thought it was a Hornet,,but you are right,,.how interesting ...the tree it was on is a Poplar,, which seeded itself from a willow,,Β
but outside my front door..anyway I changed the name .
but "Β Its protective coloration is an example of Batesian mimicry, as its similarity to a hornet makes it unappealing to predator"
