Description
These are the 3 most common missinterpretations about pterosaurs in media.1) Pterrordactyls/ The Regular Pterodactyls:Your average pop-culture pterosaur, kinda popular, the regular Pterodactyls, whose appereance in movies, tv, videogames, etc are still going on and I don't blame'em, because it looks awesome (As much I hate to admit, I had too much fun drawing this fella), I mean, just look at it, is like a mix of were-bat-lizard-devil-bird thingy thatΒ preys on innacurately sexy cave/jungle girls to feed their pterodacty...lets. And that's cool. This creature doesn't care about time and space, because you can even see it on fantasy settings, you know, because dragons are not as hardcore as them. It has the next set of innacurate features:
- Robust, Toothed Beak.
- Visible Fenestra.
- Pointy, Leathery, Flappy, Six-fingered Bat Wings.
- Reptilian Eyes.
- Humanoid Torso (Abs are optional.)
- Spiky, scaly body, with some "fuzz" poppin' out on some places, because you have to remember it acts like a bird, havin' nests and caring for chickens and all that crap.
- Bird-human-hybrid-like taloned feet, because he has to get the cavewom-I mean prey somehow...
- The popular pteranodon crest, ramphorynchoid tail.
- Bipedalism.
2) Kite-O-Dactyls/ The prehistoric living prop: Innacurately named "Pteranodons", commonly appearing in Johnny Quest cartoons, comics, etc,Β this fellas try so hard to say "HEY LOOK BRAH IM AN ACCURATE CREESHUR!!11!!", but they can't, and you know why? Because they are just used as background flying thingies near cliffs/shore, remembering you that you're in a "Prehistoric/Lost/Amazonian/Whateveryacallit Word". Yes, my darling, these guys are just sad puppets of media, flying endlessly on the background.no stop. no rest. goin' round n' round like a merry go round...I'm sure they'll be fine, but eventually, everyone runs out of time... They have these features:
- Toothed beak (optional, some of them, like the JQ "Pteranodon" have serrated beak).
- Shrink-wrapped.
- Weak arms and legs, makin them look a bit more bat-like. They even hang upside down in order to sleep.
- Visble Fenestra (Optional)
- Google-eyed, to remember you that they are mindless, stupid creatures, they just wanna eat ya, no matter your age.
- Long neck (optional, probably based on some vintage azdarchids).
- Vulture like, bald head.
- Some fuzz, as science marches on.
- Pteranodon crest, short tail, makin' it a bit more accurate than their regular pterodactyl cousins.
- Bipedalism/ Quadrupedalism (If they have the chance to land, of course...).
3) Wyvern-Dactyls/Kaiju Pterodactyls: These are obscure, I saw some of these kind of pteros back then, but I don't know where, I just know they looked like a very dinosaurian/draconian take on pterosaurs, some of them makin' it into fantasy sets, this is the kind of "pterodactyl" that bothers me more, because it tries to look like a real, warm-blooded creature, but it messes it up worse...making it look like monsters, but I'm okay with them, 'cuz they look cool. No matter their size, they always attack intelligent life and destroy cities/village/placeyoucallhome, AND THERE'S MORE! If you order now, you'll get a fire-breathing pterodactyl ABSOLUTELY FREE
Anyway, these fellas have the next innacuracies:
- Almost bipedal, with digitigrade (sometimes taloned) feet.
- Toothed beack (optional).
- Pteranodon crest, ramphorynchoid tail (both optional)
- Folded wings in a birdy/draconian-way.
- Reduced number of digits.
- Some of them with fuzz-like covering, some of them with dragon-like scales and patterns.
PS: There's a 4th one, who looks like a plucked, toothed, reptilian take on current, accurate pterosaurs (like the ones on Primal Carnage, JP3 or Gravity Falls), but I didn't want to include'em
, sinced they aren't that widespread across the Popular Culture.
PSPS: Visit Ptero-soarer on Tvtropes for more info, but just be careful...

So, where does the pterosaurs from The Good Dinosaur fit in?

A very handy guide to all the least accurate pterosaurs.
I will admit, the trope of pterodacyls grabbing folks with their feet always had a sort of rustic charm to it from my perspective, despite how wrong it is.
Curiously, I think the JP franchise's pterosaurs are all three of these things (TLW's Pteranodon is the second variant, JP3's is the third and JW's Pteranodon and Dimorphodon are the first)!
