Description
This is a test dress that we designed and made about 5 years ago. It now gets used as a sales sample on our craft stall.
It's our own dress pattern design, using a simple princess line front, with godets and a full skirt.
The design was created with some key features:
- specifically designed for Irish Dancing: full skirt, stiffened front skirt panel, high neckline, no posture aids and free movement (so no corset boning in the bodice), covered arms, nothing to catch heels in skirt
- adaptable design - here shown with a traditional arrangement of 3 front skirt panels, but is also adaptable for alternative skirt and bodice fashions
- low cost options - features are on a menu so by minimising the additional features the price can be brought down, eg. facings instead of fully lined bodice, no godets, no embroidery.
- standardised repeatable fabrics, colour choices in the ranges come and go over the years but the base fabric selections are industry standards available from stock at multiple suppliers
- hard wearing polyester main fabric (silk also an option)
- menu of options allows simple customisation and easily understandable pricing structure
- the dress using the standard fabric choice is machine washable, the silk fabrics option makes it dry cleanable. This is a novelty in Irish Dance dresses!
- comfortable : polycotton bodice lining, or facings, with no sharp, hard or scratchy internal seams
- very light weight for peak performance
- breathable organza sleeves (optional solid fabric sleeves)
- hidden zip: why do Irish Dance dresses need to use ugly zips ?
- in a competitive sport that loves bling the main fabric choices we use have great shimmer and wow with minimal need for costly or fussy embellishments, it allows for a very elegant styling with great presence
- last but most importantly for growing children it is very size and shape tolerant, with a simple bow fastened belt adjustment at the back. Most Irish Dance dresses use fitted bodices that need to be made to measure and cannot easily grow with the child.
This sample dress has been worn by both of our own girls, been a loan dress for a dance school at dancing exhibitions, been through the washing machine a few times, been taken apart to try new ideas . . . and it still looks good !
