He accompanied his parents to Rolling Stone's enrollment test for a magic school in Canterlot. Midnight's interest in magic led Night Light to bring him, despite Cloudy insisting it would only disappoint Midnight; Earth ponies can't do magic like unicorns can, after all. Using magic to hatch a dragon egg. Rolling stone, sadly, didn't get in. However, Midnight approached the egg as everyone was filing out, deciding to try it for himself. He reached out with his hoof and placed it on the surface of the egg, focusing his energy on his hoof and trying to cast it into the egg. The officials noticed, but before they could stop him, the egg cracked.
At first, everyone thought he'd broken it, but that was disproven when the egg hatched and the baby dragon popped out. Everyone was shocked, including Celestia, who came around to see what everyone was yelling about. An Earth pony with unicorn magic?! Unheard of! Of course, Celestia had to take him under her wing. That was the point that Midnight Oil knew he was meant to be a wizard. Thus, his cutiemark appeared.
