Description Gandalf : "End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it."
Pippin: "What? Gandalf? See what?"
Gandalf: "White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise."

I've always wanted to draw this scene because I just adore it! These words mean so much to me. About that drawing... I drew it in three nights actually. I couldn't sleep (probably because I drank too much energy drink), so I spent my sleeping time drawing this Anyway, I do hope some of you like it. A bit.

The pencilwork is amazing, but what really gets me is how *white* the white bits are, and how fine some of those white bits of detail are. Β Maybe it's just because I'm left-handed, but I've always had trouble with smearing of white spaces when I go for more realistic pictures. Β I have to ask: How did you pull this off?

Thank you, thank you very much! I don't think it matters if you're left or right-handed, really. Just use a piece of paper under your arm, so you won't smudge the things you've already drawn. For the lightest parts I used my eraser, I cut really small sharp edges to my eraser. This way you can make these small light hair strands I hope I could help you out a bit

Your drawings are wonderful, detail is terrific. What type of work do you usually copy from, do you draw from photographs?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Fantaasiatoidab In reply to jimvida [2014-04-02 07:15:33 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! But I wouldn't use word "copy", this way it may seem like I don't draw them but just print it out and put little graphite on it Anyway, I do use reference photos or screencaps

I apologize for using that term, it does sound cheap and your talent is anything but. I should have asked ,"what inspires you"? Once again thank you for your wonderful work.Β

I have been looking at your portraits and they are absolutely stunning.Β  I'm wondering where you managed to get an 8b mechanical pencil? I was told at Blick art supply that 2B was the softest they come in!Β  Also did you use a kneaded eraser for the white bits or is this white pastel or chalk?Β

Your work is amazing, and I'm always wanting to get tips from artists who are more skilled than me.Β  I'd love to hear anything you'd have to advise if you are so inclined to look at a couple of my portraits.Β

Thank you so much for kind words! I appreciate it! As for the question - I do not have an 8B mechanical pencil. If you look closely, you can see comma between 8B and mechanical pencil I have HB, F and B mechanical pencils (0,3&0,5&0,7mm). For the lightest parts I used just my eraser, nothing special. I cut my eraser into small triangles, this way it's really easy to do small hair strands If you have any other questions, let me know!

I normally use a kneaded eraser for light bits like hair, but sometimes if the graphite is already too worked into the paper its a little too flimsy.Β  Do you use a hard eraser then and just cut it to a sharp edge?Β Β
I should have noticed about the pencil.Β  I guess a mechanical pencil couldn't be that soft or it would be forever breaking.Β  It was wishful thinking. lolΒ  I like the ever sharp convenience of mechanical pencils, but they aren't soft/dark enough for everything.Β

I'm not a big fan of kneaded eraser, I just use hard eraser. Ooh, I love my mechanical pencils

Definitely one of my favorite scenes So sad that we'll never see Peter Jackson's interpretation of Valinor – not so soon at least. You cannot make the Silmarillion into three films.

Wonderful drawing of Gandalf, soooooo realistic Amazing job candidate for a Daily Deviation if you ask me
