I'm a bit confused. "This is a classic tuxedo-muzzle, throat and the forelegs just under the bicep as well as the belly and hind legs are covered in crisp white." So this means that the tuxedo markings themselves are the WHITE markings, not the black, which is the base coat. This conclusion is further supported by the reverse Tuxedo.

However, it then goes on to say "Heterozygous Tuxedos are always a darker shade of the main base color." Which would imply, on that particular example, that the Tuxedo markings are the dark, classic champagne color on this horse's back and not the lighter, roaned-like markings underneath.

And now we have the example with the words "Tuxedos vary in shape etc..." where the TOP of the horse's head is light and the muzzle and throat are dark....it's like the tuxedo does some bizarre twist.

And then Enharmonia's Christmas gift to me had Tuxedo markings coming from the bottom up, darker than the actual base coat. So I am very confused. What exactly are the tuxedo markings and what exactly does different genotypes do?

OKay!

The tuxedo marking is defined by a strip or a section of marking that will either cover the back of the horse or it's neck and belly.

-Tuxedos can either be the normal shape-- the muzzle, neck, and forearm and the belly- or they can be 'reversed' which means they can come form the spine down instead of the muzzle down or the belly up.Β

(Belly-up 'normal' tuxedos are like the first, second, and fifth examples.

'Reversed' tuxedos are Β the third, fourth, and sixth examples)

Homozygous tuxedo horses (or Dom tuxedos- TxTx) have white tuxedos.

Heterozygous tuxedo horses have tuxedos that are darker than the base color.Β

On the Champagne horse, he has what's called an 'Overcoat/Reversed tuxedo' that just 'lies' over his back.

The 6th cremello horse does have a strange Tuxedo. It's part reversed and part normal-- a rare occorance but it does happen.

The gift enny gave you was an example of a 'normal' Heterozygous stally !Β

Tuxedo is a simple yet complex mutation; but I hope this clears it up!! If not let me know!!

I'm not sure if this I an error or not, but I thought I should point out that Heterozygous carries only one allele (such as nD) and homozygous carries two (DD). However, if this is special to the breed, carry on and don't mind me! The sheet looks great ^^
