It's a bit hard but you'll get used to it after a while. If you want a detailed smudge, use super-small brush like 2-4 px and zoom in around 200%-300%. But it takes time to finish up a large canvas.

Ugh sorry for late reply, getting more inactive because of assignments..Anyway I use color dodge and overlay. I brushed orange on layer and color dodge it so it becomes like some sort of a glow.
