Description It was a cloudless sky...

1 hour and 58 minutes exposure.

I'm not very pleased with the layout but it's not so easy in darkness.

I would still like to wonder how people can get exposures this long? Do you just use bulb and hold the button down or something? Please fill me in

I use the bulb setting on my camera and a remote switch That's all you need.

This is Fantastic! My first thought even just seeing the Thumb was of Van Goghs 'Starry Night', anything that comes even slightly close to its beauty has got to be something truly special! The Trees look awesomely foreboding and add to the surrealness of the shot. Wow 1hr and a half in 6 below 0 degrees!! thats crazy!! my one possible complaint and it might just be the rez or something, is the trees look like they might not be in focus? im not sure about that but if you were to do it again id definitely get them in focus since the stars are going to be in motion anyway!
But yeah Gorgeous! Love It Love It!!!

First of all. I've never before received such a long comment as yours! So I really appreciate it!
I didn't remember what Van Gogh's "Starry Night" looks like so I googled it.. It's a very beautiful painting! It was nicely said that anything that comes even sllightly close to it's beauty has to be something truly special!
Trees are in the focus because I focused the photo into infinity. Somehow they do like they're out of the focus. You are right about that.
Thank you so much for your comment!

aweome did you have to use a lot of noise reduction? and did you use any filters to lessen the light levels?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

FatalBite In reply to Californicarlos [2007-10-24 06:28:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks
I didn't have to use that much noise reduction. Just some on Photoshop.
I didn't use any filters for this shot. Though I had to adjust the colors in Photoshop.

Star trail photography is really fun. Give it a try with your D80
Too bad we haven't had any clear nights lately. It's been all grey and rainy.

Wow... amazing idea
Never thought of the possibility (I think my small cam just makes up till 15s expositon time).
It also must have been a very windless night

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

FatalBite In reply to Mystic-T [2007-10-12 13:15:09 +0000 UTC]

15 seconds can make stars visible I guess
You're right. There was no wind that night

matooo In reply to ??? [2007-10-12 12:37:09 +0000 UTC]

wow! i think that you've done it very well! the only thing - when I read about photography with such long exposure times, there might occur a color cast, due to sensor heat buildup. But your photo is clear How did you manage that?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

FatalBite In reply to matooo [2007-10-12 12:46:51 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your comment!
Does this color cast usually appear when shooting 2 hours or even longer exposures? I don't know so much about it because this is my first shot that was over an hour exposure.
Maybe it had something to do with the sensor not to heat because the temperature was 6 degrees below zero. Nights are getting colder and colder

Everyone gets a break on composition when it's a nightshot, as long as there are pretty star trails to look at.

I was searching for a large pine for this kind of shot but didn't find what I was looking for so I decided to use these fir trees instead.

KSDale03 In reply to FatalBite [2007-10-12 18:58:18 +0000 UTC]

Oh, like this central obelisk-ess pine in the middle of the stars? That would be a very interesting shot... Get a logger's permit

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

FatalBite In reply to KSDale03 [2007-10-12 19:24:34 +0000 UTC]

The tree in the middle of the photo is a fir tree
Hmm, I meant an old pine. A tree like that and a starry sky would make an interesting photo
I'll try it out sometime
