Description
I went for a walk to the arctic hills here in Northern Norway and found this little stream. During my 7 hour walk I didn't see anyone, except some birds including a willow grouse that was observing me from a distance, it also let me photograph it.Full-view, please.

Really nice shot, not quite sure about the foreground rock, its just a tiny bit 'heavy' if you know what I mean, but still an image to be proud of.

Thank you Alex.
I think I understand what you mean. It draws a bit too much attention.
I noticed it also now that you mentioned it.

Beautiful landscape. Love the warm colours in the clouds. The varied layers of the landscape add a lot of depth to the shot. The light is excellent too, and I really like the textures and details.

The colors are totally wrong in this. They're way less saturated than they should be. I have no idea what is causing this. Never had this problem before.
I used polarizer and Hitech 0.9 Hard edge.
Thank you for the comment.

I was going to mention that actually, I can definitely see what you mean. Did you have your camera set to any kind of mode/stle when shooting that would effect the shot in colours, and contrast?
No problem.

FatalBite In reply to FlippinPhil [2009-06-03 19:46:10 +0000 UTC]
No, I used the AV or manual mode like usually.
I did use a different saving method, not "save for web" this time because I also have problems with it.

hm. Is your monitor calibrated? What kind of monitor do you use? I mean CTR, flat or laptop? Also you may check in which color space does the RAW converter works with the files. Normally it is set to AdobeRGB if you use their products.. and you have to change them to sRGB because web and most of PC applications are working with this profile.
I've realized long time ago that you have a lot of magenta in your pictures and I thought that you like them that way. But here I think that it is overdosed a bit because it bumps somehow with the yellowish color of the grass.
About the composition. I think it needs a bit of "free space" around the river... may be.. no idea

I have calibrated my monitor. I am using a Macbook pro unibody.
When I check Photoshop's color settings, it says in "Working spaces" that I am using Adobe RGB.
I am also using Apple Aperture and its Proofing profile is set to AdobeRGB.
Isn't there any way to use the AdobeRGB as working setting and later on save to sRGB?
It could be overdosed a bit in this one, you are right.
I couldn't add any free space around the river because that would have changed the composition. of course I could have shot 3 or two images and stitched them together but I'm quite new to that
Thank you for the help!

tangratannakra In reply to FatalBite [2009-06-04 16:16:26 +0000 UTC]
Your problem with the colors could be really from that AdobreRGB. Normally web and every other computer program uses less colors than AdobeRGB which is slightly bigger color space than sRGB.
You can also have problems with prints, since most of the home (non-professional) printers uses sRGB as a default color space too.
The raw file has now assigned color space as it s RAW... . What you can do is when opening the file with Adobe camera raw (I might use that) is to change the color space that it will set after that from AdobeRGB to sRGB. To use AdobeRGB as working space is not that good idea, because it will always have difference after that, which you won't like. So it is better to retouch your pictures to something that you will like. (I have tried that

I don't use Adobe camera RAW but I process the RAW files on Apple Aperture and then edit them on Photoshop
Now I have both set to sRGB, Apple Aperture and Photoshop. Is that a good idea?

No, not the mode sorry... any kind of picture style at all? Not sure what kind of camera you own again, so this might not apply to you to be honest.
I don't think the saving method will have anything to do with it.

FatalBite In reply to FlippinPhil [2009-06-03 19:51:07 +0000 UTC]
I don't use those picture styles at all.
I'll have to figure out what's wrong with the "save for web" saving method because I usually get less saturated photos with it.
Anyway, are the colors better now?

It is natural to lose some colour and contrast in an image when you are saving the image for the web. In the action that I use to save my images for web viewing I have a contrast and brightness adjustment layer to correct for this. You just have to figure out the approximate loss in your case it would be in saturation and then use an adjustment layer to correct for that loss just before saving the image for web. Hope this helps a bit.

FatalBite In reply to JamesHackland [2009-06-03 20:39:48 +0000 UTC]
In my case the loss of saturation is really noticeable.
I wonder what has changed because there wasn't much difference before.
Thanks James. Your advice definitely helped me.

This may be a bit dumb question but how could I check that out?

sassaputzin In reply to FatalBite [2009-06-04 10:43:04 +0000 UTC]
check your camera first .....what colour space is it using?
check the original file info it will tell you whether it was RGB or sRGB most commonly?
then when you save for web it should give you an option for the colour space...
do you use photoshop?

FatalBite In reply to sassaputzin [2009-06-04 15:10:06 +0000 UTC]
My camera is using AdobeRGB.
I cannot find an option for choosing the color space when saving for web. Only thing I can find is "Convert to sRGB" but it doesn't help much with the saturation.
Yes, I use Photoshop.

I had to over saturate the photo and save for web.. That's how I got the better saturated look but that's not what I want to do every time I upload photos to dA
