The Marquis de Sade would get a butcher to insert a fine blade between the vertebra of the neck to sever the spinal cord to totally paralyse the victim without immediately causing death. Sometimes he would demand the spinal cord be severed between T6 and T12 thus completely paralysing the lower half of the body so that he could continue to play his games while the victim was alive.
