Hey guys! Today, I’m excited to share more nature landscapes with y’all. I discovered this awe-inspiring Sacred tree on Pinterest, and it’s located in Takeo Shrine, Saga, Japan.🤩

While I was browsing for inspiration on Pinterest, the algorithm suggested images of gigantic trees, which intrigued me to explore the largest trees in Japan. I also recall watching modern Japanese and ghibli films where there were giant sacred ropes wrapped around some of the trees. This sparked my interest, and I decided to narrow down my search. Eventually, I stumbled upon this magnificent Camphor tree in Takeo Shine. It’s estimated to be 3,000 years old and stands an impressive 27m tall.🌳✨

The sacred rope is known as “Shimenawa” and the white paper pieces hanging from it are called “Shide.” These ropes are used to signify the presence of gods or spirits, and they are wrapped around trees or rocks believed to house these entities. Shide represents a sacred border. In this artwork, similar to my cave illustration practice, I aimed to limit my color palette as much as possible and attempt to gain more confidence in defining tree shapes. That’s why I chose this particular tree to draw. I can actually see the difference it has made compared to the cave illustration, showing slight overall improvement. Although the subject matter is completely different, I believe selecting this illustration was a wise decision.
